The first time I read this, I went back and reread the previous pages of the book several times. I thought, I'd be so scared in this situation, having tried to commit suicide where your lover succeeds and you don't. Then, being arrested for it while also coughing blood from lung damage, but, I realized this may have been the only time in his entire life where he understood exactly what was expected of him and he didn't have to put on an act.

I agree. I remember reading that passage too and thinking I’d probably feel the same way as him. He had dealt with inability to make good decisions, hunger, fear, heartbreak…being put in a place where he was basically taken care of must have been a huge relief to him. No decisions to make, insulated from society…peace.
