The first time I read this, I went back and reread the previous pages of the book several times. I thought, I'd be so scared in this situation, having tried to commit suicide where your lover succeeds and you don't. Then, being arrested for it while also coughing blood from lung damage, but, I realized this may have been the only time in his entire life where he understood exactly what was expected of him and he didn't have to put on an act.
The first time I read this, I went back and reread the previous pages of the book several times. I agree. I remember reading that passage too and thinking I’d probably feel the same way as him. He had dealt with inability to make good decisions, hunger, fear, heartbreak…being put in a place where he was basically taken care of must have been a huge relief to him. No decisions to make, insulated from society…peace.
