Prolog - 13 years ago, Osaka, Japan:

Liliana and Jacoby Natsworthy were walking hand in hand in Liberty Park. They had been married for 15 years; and for the last 5 have been trying to get pregnant without any success. Lilia's eyes were downcast as they walked down the path near the lake. She had gone to her OBGYN today full of hope. Finally, I thought today my dream came true! Only to be crushed once again, the doctor said she wasn't with child. That her mind made her believe she was pregnant, her body imitated the symptoms.

As they sat down on their favorite bench, Lilia caught sight of a happy couple swinging their little girl between them. A small sob rose in her throat at the sight. She wanted so badly to be a mother it hurt. Suddenly, Jacoby had her in his arms. "I'm so sorry baby, I know how excited you were." She pressed her face into his shoulder, inhaling his smokey scent. He was the captain of the local fire department, she was a 3rd grade teacher. "I...just don't understand why I can't..." Jacoby gently rubbed her back. "I know, you would make a won..."

Prolog Cont.

"M-mamma?" A small Minnie Mouse voice was heard. Lilia's eyes widened in surprise. "Jacoby...did you hear that?" He nodded. "MAMA!" Looking at each other, they ran towards the voice. 5 minutes later, Lilia was on the outskirts of the woods looking at the clearing. A small child was sitting in the grass crying. A portal of some kind was behind the child, a riot of different colors could be seen but you couldn't make anything out. As Lilia walked over, the portal closed. Her heart was aching for the small child. Kneeling next to the child, she gently spoke in a small voice. Jacoby arrived just in time for Lilia to turn around, the child cradled in her arms

It was a little girl who looked no older than 3 years old. Her reddish-brown hair fell in waves just below her shoulders. The child looked up at Lilia with wonder in her eyes. "Lilia...wh...where did she come from?" Jacoby asked. Lilia couldn't take her eyes off the sweet girl in her arms. "I followed her cries to here...I don't know where she came from." A small dimpled hand came up to touch Lilia's cheek. "Ma...ma?" A small tear fell down her cheek at this. "I can be your mama till we find her." "Lilia we can't just take her home..."

Looking at Jacoby, she said, "I know, but the child is all alone. What kind of parent would do that?" She pushed a stray strand of hair away from the girl's eyes. "We know what happens to kids who end up in the system...Please Jacoby. Can't we..." Jacoby could see how desperate Lilia sounded. This was the first time in months he had seen her be so interested in something other than just getting through the day. Maybe the child..."Alright...I guess it would be okay to look after her...at least until we find her parents."
