I first read The Hobbit many years ago, and I am happy to say it holds up well as fantasy classic. Bilbo Baggins is a comfort-loving hobbit reluctantly swept into an adventure by the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves. I loved the balance of whimsy and peril. Bilbo discovers internal strength and courage he did not know he possessed. The novel introduces readers to Middle-Earth with its rich mythology and diverse inhabitants, including hobbits, elves, dwarves, trolls, goblins, wizards, humans, and of course, the fearsome dragon Smaug. Tolkien has a warm, conversational storytelling style, which will appeal to readers of all ages. It would make a great choice of audio book for a family vacation!
