Sophie | 11 comments I don't remember much about this series. It was about three brothers. I seem to remember the covers had floating male heads and were maybe greenish? The brothers are members of a ruling elite. For a good chunk of the series, they're all kind of separated from each other and off doing their own things. The eldest is very serious and takes his position and duty seriously.

There's a lot of todo about these performances with giant rings, and acrobats who perform by dancing in and around and through the rings. The rings might be magical. Maybe they meant something significant to their society? Not sure. One of these acrobats is another main character. One of the brothers falls in love with the acrobat, who it turns out is intersex and has two sets of genitalia.

Robert (ricroscupshigh) | 540 comments It wasn't published until 2016, but sounds so similar I have to ask: Pantomime, by L.R. Lam. - Micah Grey Series ; 1?

"Micah runs away from a debutante’s life at home and joins the circus, harboring two secrets–one: he was born between male and female, and two: he may have powers last seen in mysterious beings from an almost-forgotten age. Micah discovers the joy of flight as an aerialist, courting his trapeze partner, Aenea, and confiding in the mysterious white clown, Drystan. He finally feels free. But the circus has a dark side, and Micah’s past isn’t done with him. Meanwhile, the strange 'ghost' of a woman with damselfly wings whispers to Micah that only he can help magic return to the realm, and he fears she may be right… Micah has much to learn, and he must do it quickly—before his past and future collide, with catastrophic consequences."

Adele | 1429 comments This is definitely the Ring Dancers Series by Jane Fancher The descriptions of the books don't provide a lot of detail. Mikhyel (Khyel) is the one in a relationship with a ring dancer. I think that does not become a main focus until the second or third book. The Kindle edition has the floating heads: RD 1 Ring of Lightning (RingDancers) by Jane S. Fancher RD 1: Ring of Lightning

ETA: The first review on the third book mentions the relationship with a hermaphroditic character: Ring of Destiny
