For PBT--the worst thing about this was that I thought it would count for Summer, but the road trip happens in March!
To say I was underwhelmed and disappointed is an understatement. Other than one little line, I didn't find this funny from the get go. I kept reading in hopes that, like the film Frisco Kid did, it would suddenly become funny (I thought the first part of the film was terrible but once Harrison Ford and Gene Wilder shared the screen I loved it when I saw the video.) This book was utterly depressing, not funny. The writing isn't strong.
I didn't care for Mad, nor did I care for Rube. I liked Pep a wee bit better. And on it goes. I also could find no good reason (view spoiler)[Tom's mother would let him go without running a criminal records check of the three older siblings. She wasn't a very good mother, especially since she was choosing to stay in a relationship with a man who didn't like her son and he didn't like the man, so I guess that's not totally surprising. (hide spoiler)] I kept reading since this was a group read, but by the time I finished, regretted it. There was zero depth to any of the characters.
And--spoiler here with no hiding it--it was stupider than stupid for this deadbeat dad to blame it on mental illness; it was nothing of the sort.
