Just thinking about it makes me want to eat an egg salad sandwich - a staple in Kinsey Milhone's diet. That or a hamburger with a fried egg on top. After reading about half the books, I tried a hamburger with a fried egg topper, and I was not disappointed!
Working for Bobby Callahan draws Kinsey into a tangled mix of life insurance claims, cold-case murder, and prescription drug abuse. For some reason, the case hits Kinsey hard, and it's very sad. For the first time, Grafton illustrates Kinsey's emotions. She is usually very calm and controlled, but this case really bothers her.
Millhone is a much stronger investigative agent than most of the female detectives that I follow. She has her share of flaws, which I think enhances her character. Readers learn more about Kinsey's personal life, like her family history and love life, which I enjoyed.
To balance out the sad storyline, there's a funny subplot involving a golddigger taking advantage of Kinsey's octagenarian landlord, Henry. This gives Grafton's assortment of excellent secondary characters a chance to make an appearance.
This is solid read for anyone who likes traditional detective stories. I found the book a very relaxing and easy read and loved the 80's nostalgia of it. I've only recently started reading this series, but I will definitely continue.
