Dave | 41 comments I've ALWAYS been a reader, and apparently I did my first reading at a restaurant from my high chair. I honestly can't remember my first book, but I know there was one.

Katie B | 7 comments Secret Garden was my first real book. I think I was about 7 or 8.

😊

message 62: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Partington | 3 comments I don't remember the 1st book, but grade school saw me reading anything by Enid Blyton, Trixie Beldon, Nancy Drew. There was book that I took out of the school library two or three times but damned if I can remember the name now. All I remember is it involved amethyst and mountains. Junior High - Lord of The Rings. And I haven't stopped since..

UnderCoverBookAddict | 4 comments Los vampiritos and I don’t remember the author.

ANA GARCIA | 5 comments Not necessarily a book, but I got into reading as a teenager and Harlequin's were my downfall. I'm a sucker for a good romance and HEA.

message 68: by Beth (new)

Beth Koop | 20 comments I read the Nancy Drew mysteries, and Hardy Boys and Bobbsey Twins, but I think the first set that really pulled me may have been the Little House on the Prairie series.

message 69: by Sarah (new)

Sarah B | 212 comments When I was very young in the lower grades of elementary school I would read the huge stacks of old comic books my mother had... They were already very old but I loved them. Stuff like Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, Scrooge McDuck, Nancy, Little Dot, Audrey, Richie Rich, Wendy the Witch, various horror comics, etc.

Then from the school library I would read stuff like the Hardy Boys..

By 6th grade I had a real library card and I was actually reading adult novels. I remember reading stuff like Star Trek, Dragonriders of Pern, Anne Rice, etc. I was on an 8th grade reading level in 6th grade.

message 72: by Trevin (new)

Trevin Sandlin | 5 comments The October Country, by Ray Bradbury - my dad got it for me when I was 10(ish) years old. I inhaled it. It messed with my dreams. All of a sudden I wanted to devour all Ray Bradbury works I could find. It got me to start exploring the "grown up" stacks at the public library.

ʚ manvi°•✮•° | 71 comments I used to read Thea Stilton books when I was around 9-10. It made the base for me then came The Alchemist, my first novel at 13. And what ignited my love for novels was The Silent Patient, at 16.

message 74: by Em (new)

Em | 78 comments As a child it was the Shadowhunters series and Twilight, but as an adult it was A Good Girl's Guide to Murder

message 75: by [deleted user] (new)

As a child I think it was one of Frozen 🤭😅, or The Little Prince. Now, it was Fourth Wing!

message 76: by Flo (new)

Flo (daredeviling) So many honestly but I know as a kid, I read a ton of Animorphs and Magic Treehouse somewhere in elementary school, so probably those series + other series that were popular during that time (Goosebumps, Bailey School Kids, etc). I spent a lot of time in bookstores just reading them in sequence!

Rim_reads | 80 comments As a child I read Nancy Drew, Enid Blyton, Harry Potter. There were several short stories for children book

message 78: by Len (new)

Len | 51 comments When I was young it was The Weirdstone of Brisingamen by Alan Garner, but what really turned me to reading as an adult was John Wyndham's The Day of the Triffids. I remember reading it right through the evening and into the night. There were other books which influenced me but that was the main one.

message 84: by naomi (new)

naomi ray | 6 comments The book that got me into reading as a child was actually 2 books 1. The chrismasaurus and 2. One of the wimpy of a diary kid books (the brown one) but overall it was the first one and I'm so thankful for it, but the one that got me into reading now was actually "another day"

message 85: by LiteraryCryptid (new)

LiteraryCryptid | 60 comments I've always loved reading, so it's hard to pick one specific title that I can say "first got me into reading". But I do remember which books I re-read the most as a child, which is probably the closest to an answer I can give.

- Magic Treehouse Series
- Great Illustrated Classics series (Specifically Ivanhoe and Black Beauty )
- Dragon on a Pedestal (9yr old me was obsessed with this book, and I still read the series)
- Series of Unfortunate Events
- Spiderwick Chronicles
- A Spiderman comic novel omnibus that has been re-read to the point of being taped back together many times over. Featured Dr. Doom, Sandman, The Vulture, and I think Green Goblin.

message 86: by Joelle (new)

Joelle Vargas | 1 comments Warriors.... My elementary teacher knew I had a fascination with cats (it was my whole personality as a child) and recommended the series for me. I remember using my recess and most of my lunch breaks to read!

message 97: by Lilly (new)

Lilly Britting | 7 comments For me it was the whole Escape the Furnace series.
Lockdown, Solitary, Death Sentence, Fugitives, Execution.
The whole series was super fast paced and was the perfect blend of terrifying, mortifying, but friendships I could go about forever even now. (I read these books while I was 11) I could never expect the next thing and I am so close to buying the books (I read them from the library) so I can reread them endlessly.
