A few questions to get us started:

1. What did you think of the world?
2. What did you think of the characters?
3. What worked or didn't for you?
4. Overall thoughts?

Ellen | 940 comments The title of this book is a little off-putting. It was for me at least, until the captain is given the security code "I believe in Miracles". I got it then (face palm). 1975 disco song by Hot Chocolate "You Sexy Thing". I believe in miracles is part of the lyrics. The series is Disco Space Opera so you have a bioship named after a disco song.
I thought is was a fun book. I loved the characters. I love the mix of humans and aliens.

Netanella | 389 comments I really liked this book as well, and I'm looking forward to the rest in the series. I've already requested them from my library.

I got the second book from the library and started it today.

Chris | 1131 comments There was a strong Becky Chambers cozy vibe, except for the torture in the pirate haven. I am generally lukewarm on cozy stories, and so it was here. I did enjoy the various alien races. I think that the fantasy elements--werelions, magic, ghosts--could have been left out without hurting the story.

I thought the second and third books were even better, can't wait for the fourth.

CJ | 620 comments I got past the halfway mark in this, and maybe it's just me, but I felt the story began to gel into something interesting and with direction at last after chapter 12 or so. The twist with being diverted away from the prison planet was a nice one.

Also I feel there's more meat to the world now, with themes of diversity and community (and the Holy Hive Mind as an existential threat) that feel more informed by real life experience of the author than just a mish-mash of whimsy and colorful ideas. I still feel there's a strain of derivativeness to this--it keeps reminding me way too much of Hitchhiker's Guide, Space Unicorn Blues and other books)--that I don't like.

I finished. I was surprised with how much I enjoyed it. Too dark to be cozy, too light to be grimdark... it was a competent blend of tropes and subgenres in a true found family/brothers at arms sort of work. I liked that kindness won the day, and maintaining the status quo wasn't the end result, but neither was it deviated from without effort.

As soon as the security code was said, I sang the song in my head. LOL

WTEK | 124 comments I loved this book! It reminded me a bit of Farscape in that there was a sentient ship and a diverse group of nonhumans as well as humans. The found family was also strong in it.

I really think that not enough sci-fi has a good blend of races where characters aren't just shaped differently or have green skin, but actually act, think, or communicate differently from classic humans. I loved that they had that in this book.

The long lead up to what was actually happening gave us a good space to learn who these characters were, and I do like the added bonus of food artistry. My one gripe is that I'm not a huge fan of omniscient POV. It's harder to keep it straight who is thinking what. I like full chapters or sections of chapters told from one character's POV rather than multiple people in one paragraph sometimes.

I can't wait to see where this is going, and I bought the next two books yesterday lol.

Keith Nokutenda | 5 comments The plot was moving along well enough until a whole crew escaped from a guarded prison with pretty much no issue.

Other than that, I like this more than Wayfarers #1. I think the character interactions where much more natural and the switch between POVs wasnt jagged.

Juliana Rodrigues (julianamfrodrigues) | 81 comments I just finished and really enjoyed. It was slower than I thought it would be for the most part of the book.
I was intrigued with the world and really liked the variate of species of characters. It was very interesting.
