I didn't doubt Maya's version of what happened. After we got a little more information, I became a little suspicious. Maya and the baby were both healthy and well fed. It didn't track that she had been living in a cavern and eating off the land for very long. I was surprised he would ask for a lawyer right away and not talk at all. I guess I expected him not to be very smart and a little looney.
I was surprised that he asked for a lawyer so quickly. It made me think something strange was going on. I felt like a hermit wouldn't jump to a lawyer, but talk to Josie to get back to his cave quicker.
When we learn he killed his wife, asking for a lawyer and not talking to Josie made perfect sense. He learned a lot from his prior involvement with the justice system
His reaction had my senses on alert. It wasn’t so much him asking for a lawyer immediately but the reaction to the news that Maya accused him of rape. He seemed genuinely surprised and it was a quick, unguarded moment. It gave me pause.
