4 stars

In the Time of the Butterflies is the story of the Mirabal sisters who were political dissidents that were murdered by the Trujillo regime in the Dominican Republic. The story is told in the first person, alternating between the four sisters (one of which survived). It starts at their childhood and continues to the murder and the surviving sister's life in the aftermath. The book does an excellent job at presenting the sisters as real people, beyond the legends that they became. However, I would have liked more a focus on the political part of their lives. This part was told from the point of view of one of the sisters that was less involved in the movement, so I felt disconnected from their part in the resistance. Overall it is a good book about these strong women that helped change the history of their country.

Sue | 2709 comments I enjoyed this book as well.

The author mentions the Mirabal sisters in some of her other books, and I've seen them mentioned in books about Dominicans (both in DR and the US), so I was interested to learn more about them.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8411 comments It was a 4-star read for me as well.

I also really liked her young adult book: Before We Were Free. It's a coming-of-age book set during the Trujillo regime as well.
