I'm excited to read this selection. I've watched the movies but never read the book. Who thinks they will be joining in?

Ian Slater (yohanan) | 171 comments The nineteenth-century translation by Malleson is readily available, but not very reliable. There have been some twentieth century translations with greater claims to authenticity. William Butcher provided an interesting introduction and notes in the Oxford World’s Classics “Journey to the Centre of the Earth” (note British spelling) in 1992, shortly after the biographical “Verne’s Journey to the Centre of the Self: Space and Time in the ‘Voyages extraordinaires’”. It is currently in Kindle for $3.00, only a little more expensive than some of the Malleson editions out there.

Butcher disputes whether Verne can properly be called a science fiction writer. Some of his arguments are cogent, but others amount to demonstrating that he wasn’t one all the time.

I may be joining the discussion.

I'll try to join. I need to catch up on books for a local book club and also stay current on the Star Wars High Republic books so that no one spoils the endings for me, but if I succeed, I will join. Or I might join late.

Trev | 687 comments I will join in if we read the Ladybird Children’s Classics version.

…………………….. (Only Joking) At one time I was obsessed with this story and I almost knew the Ladybird book by heart. I still remember much of the text and many of the illustrations decades later.

Looks like there's going to be a Nautilus series on AMC+. I wonder if it will be good. I'm not giving B*zos any money if I can help it, but I might accept a free trial when Good Omens Season 3 comes out and catch Nautilus then.

Fille ♡ semi-hiatus | 1 comments Does it matter if you choose to read the book in another language? English is not my first language and I don’t know if my library has an English copy.

You can read it in any language that you are comfortable reading.

Good Omens was not cancelled? Will there be a new season?

I heard that "Season 3" will be one long episode to tie up loose ends, but I'm not 100% sure.

Rafael da Silva (morfindel) | 320 comments Oh. Ok. I think I didn't know that.

Brian E Reynolds | 926 comments Like Lori, I may join in late. Due to my other reads, I want to wait to start this book until I finish the Lori-led discussion of The Valley of Decision where the last week starts on June 29th, much like I was late joining that discussion while I finished the The Vicar of Wakefield/She Stoops to Conquer read. This book looks to be relatively short, a surprise to me after last year's read of the fairly lengthy The Mysterious Island.

There's been some really good, shorter-length discussions the past few months that I've enjoyed. Even the Welsh short story collection, while repetitive, was both interesting and illuminating and more enjoyable than anticipated. Thanks, moderators.

Brian E Reynolds | 926 comments FROM Variety Magazine ON GOOD OMENS

"“Good Omens” Season 3 will be just one episode and will move forward without Neil Gaiman, Variety has learned.

It was previously announced that Season 3 of the Amazon Prime Video series, which is based on the book of the same name by Terry Pratchett and Gaiman, would be the show’s last. However, production was paused on the third season in September after Gaiman was accused of sexual assault by multiple women.

Now, Prime Video has confirmed that Season 3 will consist of one 90-minute episode, with production expected to resume in early 2025 in Scotland. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Gaiman had contributed to the writing of the series finale, but he will not be working on the show once production resumes. He is also no longer listed among the show’s executive producers for the final episode.

“Good Omens” first debuted on Prime Video in 2019, with Gaiman originally credited as creator, executive producer, and showrunner. It stars Michael Sheen and David Tennant as the angel Aziraphale and demon Crowley, respectively. The show was originally set to be a limited series, but its popularity led Amazon to renew it for a second season based on an idea that Gaiman said he discussed with Pratchett before Pratchett’s death in 2015.

UP to DATE INFO via AI (with probable release date):
Filming Start: Filming commenced in January 2025.
Location: Production is taking place in Scotland.
Format: Season 3 will be a single 90-minute episode, not a multi-episode season.
Cast: Key actors like David Tennant (Crowley) and Michael Sheen (Aziraphale) are returning.
Production Changes: There were some initial production pauses and changes, including Neil Gaiman stepping back from the project.
New Writer: A new writer has been brought in to work on season 3.
Release Date: While filming is underway, a specific release date for the final episode is not yet confirmed, but it's expected to be in late 2025 or early 2026.

Thanks for doing the leg work, Ian. I bought the Kindle of the Oxford Classics' Butcher translation. I enjoyed reading the introductory information and, after 6 chapters, the story itself is reading very smoothly, so it looks to be a bargain at $3.
