Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3761 comments I just finished my print book, so this one is up! I will probably read relatively slowly (aside from time factors, the print is tiny and hurts my eyes! 😆)

It's been sitting on my bookcase for years, so about time I get on with it really.

Jenny | 2150 comments Ooooh! You get to meet Kizzy and Dr. Chef and Lovelace and everybody!!! I am excited for you.

I grabbed my copy last night, looking for a U character, of which there are none, and got excited about rereading it. Again.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3761 comments Luckily I'm not in need of specific letters at the moment 😆

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3761 comments Only about 30 pages in so far, but enjoyed the introduction to the crew!

Jenny | 2150 comments "Prison Planet 6: The Zero-G Spot."
Just saying.

I just grabbed my book and read a few pages. Damn I love this crew.

I will try to start this one tomorrow!

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3761 comments yeah, that made me chuckle 😆

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3761 comments Still enjoying!

And I want a scrub bot! I have decided I've spent far too much of my life scrubbing toilets, and my back would really appreciate some robotic assistance there, pretty please!

Jenny | 2150 comments I want all the bots. The toothpaste bots, the imunobots, the works!
I'm sure someone somewhere is working on it.

Jenny | 2150 comments I finished it, but I want to know what you guys think before I flood the comments with my gushing.

Also, I want Kizzy's boots, and I want to meet an Aeluon. And I want to go to Port Coriol.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3761 comments Port Coriol, yes. Cricket, not so much!

Jenny | 2150 comments Unless you need a really big gun, or want to start a "scary places to visit" tour group.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3761 comments I think I'll pass 😆

This book is so much fun!! How have I not read it before now?!?!
This "movie" reference made me snort!

So, are the red coast bugs akin to crawfish?

That is what I keep picturing, but it could be because I don't want them to be actual bugs....I *hate* bugs of any kind!!

Jenny | 2150 comments Yes, think of them as crawfish. That's a good way to go.

So glad you are liking it.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3761 comments Crawfish are about as alien to me (and I wouldn't be able to eat them either - darn allergies!), but it seems like a good strategy to save from getting queasy while reading 😆

Also, I've been picturing Aandrisks as a kind of longer-limbed t-rex with a feather mowhawk 😂

Jenny | 2150 comments Sammy, allergies could be a thing of the past with the right imubots! Imunobots. Whatever.

Aandrisks for me are more of a cross between a snake, a t-rex and a velociraptor. With a mohawk.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3761 comments That would be nice. Especially if we could get rid of my coconut issues, because they're putting coconut oil in everything these days!

Jenny | 2150 comments I have to say that I am really really happy to not have allergies. I don't have to look at the ingredients list if I want to buy chips or a cookie or something.
Why coconut oil? Is it a vegan thing I wonder? What's wrong with using olive oil?

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3761 comments It's a substitute for palm oil (which I have no problems with). I blame Gwynneth Paltrow. She started harping on about how great coconut oil was, and suddenly everyone was clamouring for it. (I know it was likely just a weird timing coincidence, but I like having a scapegoat, lol!)

Never mind that it contains twice as much saturated fat as Lard does! 😆

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3761 comments And done!

I really enjoyed this one. Loved the characters, and the universe is an interesting one, but I did have one problem with this, which stopped me from going full 5 stars.

Basically, my issue is with the story. Only I don't think story is the right word. It is basically a series of Teachable Moments and Morality Tales. There wasn't any real meat to the story itself, but instead it was more of a series of vignettes imparting lessons on How to be a Nice Person and Get Along with Everyone.
Not a bad thing in itself, but I did find it a touch patronising.
I felt like I was watching episodes of one of those kids' cartoons that have a new Moral/Teachable Moment every episode to help teach little ones how to Human. With much sermonising on how to be nice.

It didn't put me off as such - it's still a comfortable 4 stars - but I am hoping the sermonising is turned down a notch in subsequent books...

Jenny | 2150 comments I didn't feel preached at, so I'm not sure that the tone is less so in the subsequent books. I can tell you that they are structured very much like Tana French did with her books. A minor character in this book becomes the focus of the next, and so on. So, it is in the same universe, but not on the same ship. Or any ship for the next one.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3761 comments Sounds good!

I'm guessing one of those will be (view spoiler)

Jenny | 2150 comments And you would be correct!

I listened to this for the 5th time today because I needed a comfort read. I also pictured them as pill-bugs.

Lexi | 778 comments The other books are much less episodic and thus you probably find them less moralizing. I love this book as demonstrated by the five times reading it. The second one is Pepper and Lovelace and a much stronger overarching plot. I like the 3rd one the least and the 4th is shorter but really sweet (you might find it moralizing again).

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3761 comments Thanks for that Lexi. I'll definitely be picking up book 2 and will see how I get on after that 😁

Judith (brownie72011) | 915 comments Why did I wait so long to read/listen to this book? It was delightful

I'm glad I finally worked it in to my reading plan and am looking forward to others in the series

I would pay a reasonable amount of money for scrub bots.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3761 comments I would probably pay an unreasonable amount of money for one... I really don't like scrubbing toilets 😆

Jenny | 2150 comments Yay! I am so glad everyone liked it!!!
I always worry bit when I recommend something that I loved reading.

Lexi | 778 comments Judith, I had not realized you had never read this series. This is one of my all time favorites.
