My publisher made Hemo Sapiens, my anthropological, femme-nist fatale forward revamp on vampires available for reviewers only until June 30th. We release in Canada Sept 30 and in the US Oct 28th. https://www.netgalley.com/catalog/boo...
Detective Luke Stockton is drawn into a spiral of intrigue and violence, haunted, hunting a killer, unaware that he is the prey of Cleo and her kind. An anthropological rethink of the vampire myth fuelled by female driven sexuality and power and a new breed of vampires not to be missed.
Underpinning the detective story in this literary novel is a tale of vampires informed by ideas about female sexuality, procreation, the Joseph Campbell notion of life feeding on life, the dire power and drive of procreation. In the beginning I was inspired by the notion of pica - pregnancy cravings which drive women at times to eat dirt when they lack nutrients to feed their young, seeking the iron in the soil. I wondered, what if the vampire myth were fuelled by pregnancy cravings for iron, the way early hominids craved iron for the growing brains of early humans? Heme is in the blood of all of us. Red signifies blood. One of the many things that differentiates humans from animals is that humans SEE red. Hemo Sapiens delves into primal urges in early humans, and wonders what it is that separates human from animal, predator from prey, herder from sheep.
