Nirkatze | 22978 comments Tempted... but also hesitant. I loved the TV series and I've heard they changed a lot to update the story, both with more historical accuracy and to make it less... Western-supremacy colonist-attitude. Also... having studied Japan and loving this era of Japanese history... well, like I said. Tempted but hesitant. We'll see if I can squeeze it in.

I picked it up on sale, to try it with you guys... but only if you guys find time to read... alot of people have been quiet lately, and this is a megachonker, and there's plenty of other things to be reading... if not this time, I'll try it next time / eventually...

Frank | 844 comments I read this one in High School, several years after its' release ans was fascinated by Japan, which then led me to read all of Clavell's catalogue and many other Asian themed books.
In any event I'll be happy to jump in on a reread for me.
Let me know.

Frank | 844 comments In rereading this book from many years ago and watching both mini series, while I first enjoyed the 1980 version with Richard Chamberlain, in the reread I realized that so much of the novel brought Toranaga to the forefront, his thoughts, motives and much of what he did, and put Anjin in a lesser role, although an important factor in creating change. The new miniseries 2024, portrayed this so much better, and downplayed the romance, and increased the blind sense of duty that each person had.
This is a wonderful book, that I consider one of my top 10 historical novels of all time.
I hope that everyone can get to this in the future.
