Set in Vienna in the 1960s to 1980s, protagonist Robert Simon acquires a café, which he never names. This is a low-key “slice of life” book with little to no plot. It follows the lives of Simon’s friends, coworkers, and the regular visitors to the café. Some play a large role in the story, such as Mila, the woman he hires to help run the business, while others come and go briefly. People live and die, experience successes and failures. It is a story about community. It is a pleasant read, but I found it hard to get invested. I read the English translation from the original German. I much prefer Seethaler’s A Whole Life, which I highly recommend.
