The Architect's Apprentice by Elif Shafak - 4* - My Review

Historical fiction set in the Ottoman Empire during the 16th century, this story follows Jahan, a young Indian mahout who arrives in Istanbul with a white elephant, Chota, to join the Sultan’s menagerie. Jahan becomes one of four apprentices to Sinan, the chief imperial architect, a real historical figure responsible for some of the most iconic structures of the era. The narrative spans the decades of Jahan’s life as he experiences love, betrayal, political intrigue, and personal growth. The book explores the factors that define one’s place in the world.

Shafak’s prose is lyrical and evocative, laced with sensory detail. The novel’s structure is episodic, moving through different architectural projects, wars, prison stints, journeys, and historic events. The characters are beautifully rendered. Even the elephant is provided with a unique personality. It serves as a quiet challenge to narrow definitions of identity and culture. Reading this book felt like an escape to a different time and place.

This book was my introduction to Shafak. It was an immersive escape. I remember thinking that it was a bit like Arabian Nights with its continuing episodes.

It also has one of the most beautiful book covers I've ever seen.

I agree that is has a feel of Arabian Nights with its episodic structure. I read an ebook so I didn't see the physical cover. I've read quite a few of Shafak's books and I always seem to enjoy them.
