* Description:
"Fuglakvæðið from 1806 is a fierce and violent tale for independence. The poem, written by Nólsoyar Páll, concerns him and the growing Faroese independence movement and their struggle against the oppressive Danish monarchy and its intrusive trade monopoly on the islands.
The various participants in the struggle are personified as native birds, with the Faroese people taking the form of small birds, and the Faroese-Danish nobility and the Danish king taking the form of raptors. Nólsoyar Páll himself is transformed into the national bird, Tjaldur, who guides the small birds to freedom.
Fuglakvæðið is written in the style of a traditional Faroese ballad, called kvæði. It is written in the beautiful Faroese language and features strong rhyme and rhythm. There are Danish translations beside the original text, and the book contains many wonderful illustrations of the birds, humanified and dressed in formal attire reflecting the individual or class the bird represents."
