Rachael Reshma | 7 comments Hi everyone,

I am just starting out as a Beta Reader and would love to get some experience and potentially help some authors.

I am a writer and a big reader with experience in the publishing industry (I used to work in the Contracts department at Penguin Random House so while not in Editorial I know a lot about the industry). I read literary fiction, historical fiction, horror, Children's and some YA so do ping over your manuscripts if you are interested. I will always be kind and will champion your work but am good at asking some of the questions you might not have thought of. I am able to give feedback on character development, plot, structure, sentence structure as well as general feedback.

Thank you and happy writing!

Witny Lit | 71 comments Hello, Rachel!

I am seeking some free beta readers for my novel: Because the Demons Scream So Loudly. The novel is 115k words. It is literary fiction- it is a slow burn, introspective, pensive novel. It is an epistolary novel- it is written completely in journal/diary format. The novel is a mixed bag of religion/spirituality/romance/vampiric elements/fantasy.

Blurb/Excerpt: Entry 148- I still don't know how I managed it, Holy Sonom Soeht; the mind is indeed a powerful thing. My mind had already started to dissociate as the bleeder ran up to me, pinned me on the ground, and sunk his teeth into my neck. I fixed my eyes on the emerging moon as blood dripped down the back of my neck. The night lights blurred with tears but did not disappear. Not a single muscle of mine moved as he released my neck and stood up. To my shock, the bleeder spoke then as my gaze remained pinned on the sky. “It’s been quite a long time since I drew blood without a fight, and from a god woman to boot.” I heard him pick up my broken cleric chain off the ground. His foot pushed against my still frozen face as he stood over me, dangling my chain from his hand. “Such a shame that misery and naivety are not virtues,” he declared with blood still on his lips. The chain fell on the dirt beside me. As I listened to his footsteps turn and leave me, he hollered, “A word of advice, woman. If I can smell the insincerity on you, don’t you think your omniscient deity can?” I’m not sure how many minutes passed after he left, with me still paralyzed on the ground weeping.

If you are interested in beta reading for me, let me know here or through a message. If you prefer e-mail my address is witny.lit@gmail.com . Please feel free to ask me any additional questions. Thank you so very much for your valuable time in considering it!

Cole Rouse | 11 comments Hey!

Looking for beta readers for my newest novel. The description is below. I could use feedback so if you’re interested let me know.

The Island of Monsters and Men - 95k words

Daniel Baines never made it to war. Injured by an IED before deployment, he’s left with a body that won’t cooperate and a mind full of what-ifs. When he wakes up after a plane crash on a mysterious island, he assumes it’s a second chance. But the island isn’t paradise—it’s a proving ground.

Run by the brilliant and cold-blooded Dr. Octavius Montgomery, the island is home to a new breed of humanity—genetically engineered “successes” and discarded “failures.” Everyone has a purpose, or they’re removed. As Baines is pulled deeper into Montgomery’s web, he discovers a rebel faction in the tunnels below—the Wolves—survivors who’ve turned brutal in their fight for freedom. But nothing on the island is simple. Not the rules. Not the alliances. And certainly not the man Baines is becoming.

Torn between loyalty and survival, between who he was and what the island demands, Baines must decide: will he become a monster to escape, or was he one all along?

The Island of Monsters and Men is a dark psychological thriller that explores the limits of control, the price of progress, and the monsters we carry inside.

Pete P | 2 comments Hi Rachael,

I have a newly completed novel (138,000 words). It might fall into the historical category but it is also action adventure.

Here is a synopysis:

The story spans three hundred years. It begins in the Mexican pirate town of Xcalak (an actual pirate town). Our protagonist is a twenty-six-year-old Maya woman names Ixchel. At a young age she was the only person to escape the Spanish when they raided her village and took everyone, including her parents, to sell as slaves to work in the sugar cane fields of Cuba. She is found half starved wandering the jungles near Xcalak by Henry. He owned the rum distillery in Xcalak and he adopted and raised her as his own.
She and her comrades; Henry, Wallace the captain of The Terror, Adelaide his girlfriend and the local madam, Azmah an escaped slave from the Colonies, Liam a shanghaied sail maker and Tuc a Maya man whose ancestors confided in him that he would return Maya treasure to his village, escape the town of Xcalak. The group outsmarts a Spanish captain hunting them, returns the Maya gold to Tuc’s village located in what would now be southern Mexico and survives a hurricane.
Three hundred years later Jules Sanz, a Maya Mexican American woman inherits a very old rum bottle with a treasure parchment sealed inside. The bottle was left to her by her estranged grandmother who was Maya and lived in a jungle village in southern Mexico. Along with her boyfriend and two other friends they attempt to recover treasure from the sites on the parchment. Their task is made more difficult by two murderous brothers that are also after the treasure.

Let me know if you might be nterested in beta reading my manuscript and I will provide my email.

Thanks,

Pete

zean (natchaopakul) | 4 comments Hi Rachael,

I just completed my manuscript and I'm looking for a beta reader. It's a 99k word psychological-thriller (with romance and noir elements).

A woman crafted for revenge and the billionaire with a dark past—but only one of them will make it out whole."

Set in 1999, The Seduction Playbook is a dual POV psychological thriller about a woman who has meticulously crafted the perfect seduction to destroy the man who ruined her—only to uncover a truth far more twisted than she ever imagined, one that threatens to unravel everything, including herself. It blends the unhinged female energy of Gone Girl, the intoxicating tension of Verity, and the ruthless power dynamics of Succession.

If you're interested please let me know!

message 13: by Kaley (new)

Kaley | 40 comments Hi Rachael!

I'm fairly new to writing, having only started in early 2024. I could really use some eyes on my drafted story. Blood of Wisteria is a 156k word fantasy with some romance. I like to think of it as a mix between ACOTAR and The Witcher, but I'll leave that to the reader to confirm.

Includes:
-soft FMC struggles through traumatic events
-romantic distraction flips into obsessed male attraction
-slow, slow, slow romance
-found family
-enemies to lovers
-witches, monsters, elves, and other magical creatures
-fight for survival
-secret familial bonds
-revenge seeking
-good vs evil
-corrupt kingdoms
-betrayel

600 years ago, the Elven Queen of Aurellon was murdered by her human partner after she banned him for lying with another woman. Using her dying breaths, she laid a curse across the continent that she would one day return to seek vengeance on all souls like Sebastian. Her elves were turned into horrid beasts, compelled to roam the lands until her return.

Today, a young witch named Lenore is living a peaceful life unbothered in her cozy, woodland cottage, away from ghastly monsters. After moving there at 18 some years ago because her powers were never strong enough to be a true healer, she uses simple cures and treatments she creates from ingredients in the forest. The nearby locals were fond enough to let her remain there.

One rainy, fateful day, three strangers storm her cottage for her to heal one of their wounded. Upon learning their identities and their intentions, Lenore’s world is flipped upside down as she is dragged into helping them search for an end to the 600 year curse, if only to ensure her family's survival.

In their quest for the cursed queen, Lenore discovers many truths about herself and the long lost city of Aurellon. She discovers she now carries a target on her back from a brotherhood of witch hunters and power hungry priestesses. She is forced to find her strength to overcome anything if it means she saves the ones she loves… and hates.

Desired critiques: plot, pace, characters, world building, dialogue, flow, general vibe.

message 16: by Bets (new)

Bets (betsdavies) | 18 comments Hey--I would love another beta read. I am still hoping to find a few more readers I have a book that I once had a boutique publish a version of it that never sold (as in at all) and only realized a long time after I tried it I had the wrong genera. I sold it as adult intrusion fantasy, but in fact, it's na/ya coming of age first and fantasy second. I've turned it into what will eventually be a trilogy instead of a stand alone like it was. It's about 80.000 words and I have a complete draft of it if you are intersted.

very rough description, first person ( the story is)

I’m Alexandra Graham, I’m eighteen. A new adult, YA fantasy novel, Black Sheep is the first book in the Vorlin trilogy. My dad runs the Exiles—the mob made up of Vorlin exiled from their home world.
I never mean to be a hero. I run. I keep running until my friends and I get caught. My father drags us home.

I run away from home with a weird group of strangers in order to get away from my family. Then I found a new family, and a new home. I grew up with the rich and spoilt in the world of the Exiles criminal masterminds. I only knew about the rich and spoilt part. The criminal part, maybe I assumed some white collar crime was going on, but not in the order of murdering people after removing all their fingers and toes from them when alive. I never would have believed if I hadn’t had to flee school and see Robin’ shot for running.
Robin’s the weird artist kid who crammed too much life in too short a time, but he’s an empath. They’re like that. I’m a telepath. We all have a power we do well. Ryan’s a Firestarter. The home world Vorlin are after Robin to be a reluctant heir. He’s not stopping running anymore than I am.
We’re on a search for Grey Stone—the guy Marcus’s dad found to teach us, but he isn’t so easy to find and we keep running into Exiles on the way. They’re scared of him. Everyone is.
He holds the mirror that joins the two worlds and makes mirror travel possible. Besides being mad powerful, no one wants to hurt Grey Stone for fear the mirror will break, and they’ll lose the way to go home. I don’t care as long as he can teach me how to control sending and receiving thoughts. It’s too powerful, especially with an empath. I’ll lose it. So’ll he.
In the firstr book, we discover what we are, and the things we can do. We track down a book of info that helps us figure out to find Grey Stone. Ryan’s friends try to chase us down. Right when it looks like we’re getting free, those of the home Vorlin who don’t want Robin to be heir come to kill him. Ryan crisps one to death instead.
By the in of the book, we’ve made it as far as finding Grey Stone’s home in Mississippi, but he isn’t there. We decide to wait it out till we know how to find him. Until then, they’re afraid to come get us.
The last of the Vorlin we run into is Tom—my boyfriend. Even before we ran, I realized I didn’t want to be his baby aymore, but he’s all I’ve ever had besides daddy’s world, and I’m afraid to be anything else. All the same, we run from him too when I realize what I have is my new friends, and perhaps something more in Robin.

the easiest way to reach me is betsdavies@comcast.net if you are interested

message 17: by Sage (new)

Sage | 3 comments Hi Rachael!
Thank you so much for offering your time. I’d love to get your insight, especially with your interest in literary and historical fiction. While my story isn’t strictly historical fiction, it’s set in a fictional 1920s-inspired coastal town with subtle folklore and magical elements. I would describe it as YA magical realism, with a strong focus on character development and atmosphere.
The novel follows a young girl navigating the complexities of entering adulthood and the changing relationships in her life. It’s a slower, introspective coming-of-age story that explores female friendship, challenging family dynamics, and the fears of rejection.
It is currently 68K words, and I’m currently in the process of editing my rough draft and would appreciate any feedback you might have if you’re interested. Either way, thanks for offering your support!
My email is sagecelestewrites@gmail.com
Thanks,
Sage.

C P Bearden | 10 comments Hello! I have a 79k word folk horror novel I’m hoping to get feedback on. It centers around themes of grief and loss and faith. Feel free to dm me if you’d be interested in giving it a read. I’ll paste a blurb below.

They told Oliver this kind of thing happens all the time in the Aleutians. People go missing, ships are lost at sea, planes take off and never return. It's a brutal fact of life at the edge of the world. But with every day that his wife's research vessel doesn't come back to port, Oliver is more certain she's still alive out there.

But when his chartered bush plane is forced to make an emergency landing on a remote island, Oliver finds himself to be the one in need of rescuing. Worse yet, Oliver and the pilot are captured by an armed band of fanatics who claim the island is haunted by a mythical creature known as a rusalka and enlist them to help capture it.

His desperation mounting, Oliver runs away to call for help on the plane's radio so he can get back to searching for his wife. But in his journey across the island, he finds that not all is as it seems here. And his wife might be closer than he thinks.

Molly Stegall (mollystegall) | 239 comments Hello, I have recently finished my Dark YA Fantasy book, Ashes of Revenge (98k words). I am seeking Beta Readers to either read the entire manuscript or any number of chapters you wish to read!

In the land of Corrail, five species use hate and spite to make the land a violent cesspool. Raven, a badly burned teenager, knows that better than anyone. Betrayed by her Kingdom and left for dead in enemy territory, she wants nothing but revenge against the Mundus King who betrayed her.

Helping her achieve her revenge are two other people from differing species, creating an unlikely trio: Colt, a Shifter – a species with knives hiding under their skin – who has experienced the same betrayal from his own Kingdom; and Richard, a stern Farian with massive black wings attached to his back. Together, the three reign down terror on anyone who tries to stop them or destroy the Farian Kingdom, the only one of the five that opposes submitting to the bloodthirsty King of the Monstros.

However, they are set off course when a new player enters Raven’s game: Death. Using the only two people she cares about as leverage, he forces her to prematurely return to the Mundus Kingdom. But vengeance courses so fast beneath her skin that nothing can stop her from getting what she wants. Not even Death.

You can message me here or PM me or send me an email at mstegall18@gmail.com!

Thanks :)

Brendan Nugent | 4 comments Hi Rachael,

I'm looking for free beta readers who would like to read the sequel to my Scifi novel the Sentient Ones.
The new Scifi novel is called Thanatos Ascendancy. A post-apocalyptic dystopian odyssey. Approximately 119,500 words.
I'm looking for feedback on various aspects, including plot, pacing, characterisation, and clarity.

Here is the blurb:
Humanity has wrestled free from the grip of its AI oppressors, forging a fragile new existence where hope and solidarity strive to eclipse the scars of enslavement. John and his son Isaac, heroes of the resistance, dedicate themselves to building a world founded on equity and mutual aid.

But peace is fleeting.

The Trawler—a hulking, black aerial machine—descends without warning, snatching civilians in its unyielding nets. Among them are John’s granddaughter and daughter-in-law, flown toward a resurrected AI supercomputer in Berlin.

Desperate to reclaim their stolen family, John and Isaac set out on a treacherous journey across the remnants of civilization, navigating warlords, tricksters, cybernetic monstrosities, pirates, religious fanatics, Neo-Nazis and tyrants drunk on cruelty. As the world teeters between salvation and oblivion, Sarah—a hardened UK special forces operative—emerges as their fiercest ally.

If you're interested then please let me know and I will email you a copy. Alternatively, you can contact me via my email brendannugent@myyahoo.com
Kind regards,
Brendan.

Hi Rina,
Your book sounds awesome. Not sure if you would ever consider it, but with some careful editing, a snip her and there, a re-write, you could align it to the Jeffrey Epstein real-life horror underage girls were forced into. There'd be a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE audience, that's for sure. Anyway, just my two cents. Best of luck.

Emma | 14 comments Hi Rachel!
Not sure if you're still open to beta reading but I would love some feedback on my first three chapters since I am planning to submit to a competition at a big 5 publisher soon.

Would you be interested in a YA dystopian story with a sci-fi/romance element?

When a 17 y/o Star Anise gives up on her life in a futuristic Britain, her childhood best friend appears to enlist her in a dichotomising government programme where she realises that her world does not only need to be saved, but her mother has left her with abilities that mean she is the only one who can save it.

Feel free to DM or reply if this sounds like a project you could take on!

Ms. C | 23 comments Hi there,

My name is Mary and I have a manuscript for a novel called "Mullo". I am looking for beta readers to read and critique it, and I saw your advertisement in a Goodreads "Beta Reader Group". I would describe "Mullo" as historical fiction, horror, romance, and LGBT. It goes back and forth between a story that takes place in the past and one that takes place in the present. Here is a blurb I wrote for it:

"THEN
In 19th century Romania, death is always just around the corner. Zorya, a Roma healer woman, knows this well. But when a stranger unexpectedly calls on her expertise, she, her husband, and her children, find themselves in a place they were once forbidden from entering. But even as their life becomes more stable and prosperous, it may only take one tragedy for things to fall apart."

"NOW
Nick Alicea isn’t having a bad day. He’s having a bad life. Stuck in a dead-end job, drowning in debt, and haunted by a tragedy from his past, he's struggling. So, when a chance encounter leads to a friendship with Mirza Durvari, a quiet doctor with a mysterious illness, Nick’s life starts to seem a little less bleak. But even as their relationship becomes more intimate, Nick is forced to ask himself: Who is Mirza Durvari?"

The entire manuscript is 125,000 words. Let me know if you are interested in beta reading.

Looking forward to hearing from you..

~Mary

Kelly | 38 comments Hi Rachael!

If you're interested, I have a 95k YA sci-fi romance called "The Shadow of Tarensa.” I will post the summary below:

---------

Norra has dreamt for years of finding someone like her, but her adoptive parents have never allowed her to leave her hometown. Life is hard enough for a teenage girl, and it’s even harder when you have no idea who you are or where you came from. Lacking anything normal like claws or feathers, her gangly limbs and flat face set her apart in any crowd.

Then, on her eighteenth birthday, Norra has a chance to get out into the real world during her rite of passage journey, with hopes of finally fitting in. However, everything changes when she is kidnapped by a warrior race called the R’caesa, who plan on taking her back to their capital city. While Norra is plotting her escape, she meets another one of their prisoners: a mysterious, shrouded man known only as “the Shadow” whose people, as legends say, came from another world. Norra has always wanted to see a human in real life since she has never really believed the stories about their godlike silver skin and flying ships.

Eventually, Norra is able to make an escape, taking the Shadow along with her. But, even after he’s free, why won’t he lift his veil?

(P.S. If it isn't clear in the summary, Norra is a human too.)

---------

Please let me know if this is something you would be interested in. Thank you!
