5) Guess the Plot (From a Made-Up Title)
How to play:
Someone invents a fake book title, and the group makes up what they think the plot could be.
Example Title: The Library of Forgotten Shadows
What’s it about? Who’s in it? Thriller? Fantasy? Romance?

The Tavern of Lost Souls"

The Tavern of Lost Souls is a supernatural fantasy.

Plot - When recently deceased bartender Marcus Jordan finds himself trapped in limbo, he discovers he must operate a mystical tavern that serves as a waystation for souls who have died but cannot move on to their final destination. Each soul has unfinished business that anchors them to the mortal realm. The tavern exists in another dimension where time flows differently. Marcus must help the lost souls find closure before they can proceed to whatever comes next.

Marcus himself doesn't remember how he died, and the longer he stays in the tavern, the more his own memories fade. When a mysterious woman arrives claiming to be his widow, Marcus realizes he might be the most lost soul of them all.

Marcus Jordan - The bewildered bartender-turned-spiritual guide who slowly uncovers the truth about his own death and the life he's forgotten.

Vera Santos - Marcus's alleged widow, who appears to be living but can somehow visit the tavern. She holds secrets about Marcus's death and their relationship.

Old Gus - A gruff, centuries-old soul who serves as the tavern's cook and Marcus's mentor in the art of soul-guiding.

The Ferryman (or woman) - A mysterious figure who occasionally appears to collect souls who have found their peace or to issue warnings.

Algernon (Darth Anyan) | 389 comments The Tavern of Lost Souls is a horror comedy anthology similar to Spider Robinson's Callahan's Crosstime Saloon

The tavern keeper is Chtulhu, because his many arms allow him to serve multiple patrons simultaneously. Various ghosts and monsters drift into the tavern from different realms and get sloshed on the bubbling green concoction that is the barman's special brew.
Each patron is expected to tell a tale of their demise or of adventures in the dark dimensions, but fights are often the result of incautious comments from critics in the audience.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12569 comments Another good story that I would like more of (along with that bubbling concoction!).

Jason Oliver | 3046 comments Interesting ideas guys. It's fun to see the different ideas.

The Tavern of Lost Souls centers on a group of strangers that have all been trapped at a small, abandoned tavern due to an unexpected and unexplained snowstorm. Think the setting of the movie The Hateful 8 but with the feel of Anxious People. The book focuses on their interactions, facing the fear of death in this storm, worrying about their loved ones since they are cut off from all communication. There is trust issues and disagreements. Through the story, you learn that each person is on a path to what they think will bring them happiness. Career, parental approval, a family, meeting favorite celebrity, baptism, etc. Slowly, each person recognizes they are on the wrong path. They are lost souls searching about. Very The Breakfast Club type moments. At least one character tries to escape the tavern during the storm.

When the storm dissipates, they don't really want to leave. This Tavern has become a place of comfort. Each face an anxiety of the unknown the decisions they have to face once leaving, but they all do leave with awkward and heartfelt goodbyes.

The last person to leave comes over a rise several miles away from the tavern. They pull over on the hill, get out of the car and look back in the direction of the Tavern. They are the only ones who decided to stop and look back. The Tavern is not visible, only a snowstorm that encompasses the Tavern and its immediate area.

Season of the Snail is a murder mystery which centres on Snidely, a snail who has become an amateur detective. Because he moves so slowly he enlists the help of fellow animals--not birds, many of whom enjoy eating snails--both to follow leads and transport him to inspect crime sites. In this book he is investigating the murder of his former human, Susan, and as he works to solve the case he also has to figure out how to let her human suitor know who did it. During this time he is relentlessly hunted by Rockin' Robin who desperately wants to enjoy Snidely for dinner, and may possibly have ties to the murderer.

Season of the Snail is a literary fiction novel with elements of magical realism that addresses environmental themes.

Plot - In the fictional town of Maravilla, marine biologist Dr. Jennifer Chen discovers that the local snail population has begun exhibiting strange behaviors. They are moving in geometric patterns, leaving behind trails that form ancient symbols. When Jennifer realizes that the snails are responding to environmental changes, she begins documenting what she calls "the great slowing."

As climate change accelerates around them, the snails' behavior becomes a kind of prophecy, predicting floods, droughts, and ecological collapses with eerie accuracy. The town becomes divided between those who see the snails as harbingers of doom and those who believe they're offering a path to survival. Jennifer documents the snails' seasonal patterns while dealing with her own life's frantic pace, in contrast to the snails' slow and methodical approach to existence.

Dr. Jennifer Chen - A driven marine biologist who must learn to embrace slowness and observation over speed and achievement.

David Fleming - Jennifer's husband, a tech entrepreneur whose obsession with rapid growth represents everything the snails seem to be warning against.

Amara Whitecloud - A local Indigenous elder who recognizes the snails' patterns from ancestral lore.

Camilo Martinez - A troubled teenager who finds peace in watching the snails and becomes Jennifer's research assistant.

Algernon (Darth Anyan) | 389 comments Season of the Snail is a coming of age story in the style of William Kent Krueger. Sean is a twelve years old boy just recovering from a polio infection that has confined him to bed for a couple of years. Sean became a bookworm, living in the imaginary worlds of the adventure and travel novels he read. Isolated from his peers at school, Sean is now re-learning to live in the outside world, but he feels like an outcast and is bullied when he returns to school for his frailty and his shyness.
Sean lives somewhere in a rainy place, like the Puget Sound from Snow Falling on the Cedars, in the 1930s. He gets interested in the habits of snails after he accidentally steps on one on his return from school. While hidden in the bushes where he feeds his new pets on green leaves and watches carefully over their habits, Sean overhears a dangerous conversation about plans to drive a family of Japanese immigrants out of town.
His curiosity awakened, Sean starts to watch from the shadows the house of his neighbours, eventually befriending the older daughter of the Japanese family. His spying is discovered and the two children become friends due to their common outcast status and their shared love of books.
Events become dramatic when the bullies attack and burn the house of the immigrants. Sean and the girl must grow up fast in this toxic environment.

Algernon (Darth Anyan) | 389 comments alternate version: Season of the Snail is a travelogue about the solitary traverse of the Pacific Coast Ranges in British Columbia. The snail is Cormac McNaughty, a wilderness enthusiast who is carrying his huge backpack containing all his provisions and equipment exactly like a snail with his house on his back.
Cormac describes his mishaps with bears, wild bees, thieving racoons, storms, sudden floods, grumpy woodsmen and corporate goons restricting access in a satirical, self-deprecating way reminiscent of Bill Bryson and is love of nature originates in the essays of John Muir.

Lost in the West"

Lost in the West is an existentialist novel set in the emptiness of living in both the wilds of the west but also in the urban sprawl that has taken over much of it.

Main characters:
Jean-Paul, stuck in Los Angeles, longs for a switch to a Marxist government which he feels will improve California's capitalist greed-based culture and will remove all religious zealots.

Søren, lost in the stark badlands of Alberta, is trying to find his way back to civilization, all the while deliberating Christian ethics and the infinitive qualitative distinction between man and God.

Conflict arises when the two men meet. Who knew existentialism contained such contrasting philosophers? Available at all fine booksellers.
