I would guess no. 3 is a lie

Let me try next:
1. I prefer ebooks to paper books
2. I never read the ending of a crime book to find out who the killer is
3. I will read any new book written by John Green

1. I love the trope of the bad seed.
2. Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres.

Wrong. I LOVE oatmeal.

It's # 1. I kinda tricked y'all ... because I already HAVE a first edition of TKAM (Though I would give my left arm for a SIGNED first edition.)

Amy | 12914 comments Well, which is it? Was number two or number three my lie? I think we can all agree it wasn’t number one….. maybe I get another vote or two before I tell you which one it was…. Who knows me better?

message 56: by Karin (last edited Apr 22, 2025 02:13PM) (new)

Karin | 9210 comments I'm going to guess that number 3 is the lie for Lyn.

Here are mine:
1. I have gone rock climbing.
2. I have read the Little House on the Prairie out loud 5 times.
3. Joni Mitchell has been a patient of my dad's in my little home town hospital.

I'm going with #1. I know it's not #3 because she's definitely started and not finished books for challenge tags, and though #2 is a contender, I somehow could see Amy writing a non-fiction book of some kind - biographical or related to her profession. . Thus, that leaves #1even though I know she's a heavy print library book reader.

Good guess, since I'm not a jock and only did it on one leadership training week, but it's number 2; I've only read Little House on the Prairie out loud 4 times :)

well, Hardy's Tess was not a book I liked when I read it in high school - which I did voluntarily not because it was assigned . I was a geek for sure - like classical music, read classics just because, etc. I have never liked Hardy.

I loathed Tess and won't read most of his fiction, but I did like Under the Greenwood Tree which is not as dark an dreary as most of his novels.

That is correct. I avoid those books.

Amy | 12914 comments You guys are very tricky. I wonder if I’m tricky too.

I would have guessed the love of oatmeal. I feel like the answers get revealed sometimes before we have the chance to guess them. I also would have gone with rock climbing for Karin. Clearly I was wrong on both counts.

message 67: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12914 comments Three for Lyn. Maybe she hasn’t read all of Jane Austen’s books. The others feel believable to me.

message 71: by Holly R W (new)

Holly R W | 3110 comments Here are my guesses so far for the people who have not yet told us their lies:

Amy - 3. I have never DNF'd a book. Even if I skim the rest to make sure I haven't missed anything, I am compelled to finish.

Lyn - 2. I love a little magic in my books.

Algernon - 1. I prefer ebooks to paper books.

message 72: by Holly R W (new)

Holly R W | 3110 comments Which one of these is my lie?

1. I enjoy short story collections.

2. I enjoy memoirs.

3. I enjoy World War II sagas.

message 73: by Lyn (new)

Lyn (lynm) | 1123 comments My guess for you Holly is #3

message 74: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12914 comments I also think #3 is Holly's lie.....

Algernon (Darth Anyan) | 389 comments I managed to trick you guys, seeing as I'm new and you don't know me yet: I was lying about John Green: I liked him in the beginning, but I grew tired soon enough about the limitations of his style, seeing as he sort of writes the same book over and over again, using death as a sure way to get some tears.

I am actually one of the few readers who embraced ebooks right from the start, because they are easier to order in my country than print books in English and easier to carry around. Before I got my first Sony reader, I always lugged a book or two with me, even on top of mountain in a backpack and they were not always the thin ones. I am also keen on increasing the font size, what with needing a second pair of glasses for reading.

message 77: by Holly R W (last edited Apr 23, 2025 05:23AM) (new)

Holly R W | 3110 comments @Algernon, the reason that I guessed John Green was that you continue to surprise me with how varied your reading is.

As a newcomer, we don't know you that well yet, but we will get to know you better. Just give us time and continue posting your opinions.

message 78: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12914 comments So who knows me best? Of course it would be Jason, Theresa, and Holly! The funny thing is, that it used to be true and I was a public stickler about that. Before this year I had never once DNF'd a book. I couldn't. I would get wrapped up and I had to finish. But something about 2024 helped me get loose and I kicked that habit to the can. Theresa saw it. It was like newfound power.

About the writing, this is also true. You guys know me as someone who loves to read fiction, and really in general doesn't care for non-fiction. But in my writing its actually the opposite and I consider myself a non-fiction writer and an essayist. I don't know that I could ever write a fiction tale, but I write essays all the time. I have been writing journals to my children for years. I write spiritual missives. I write about the deeper meanings of things. About hope and resilience and faith. I have written clinical stories/vignettes about my patients meant for teaching and publication. I have written about the deeper meanings of the holidays. And writing essays for my kids. For each of the older two for their High School Graduations, I gave them each a printed book of essays I had written for each of them. It included each of their Kindergarten essays, their bar mitzvah speeches and essays for college, and our speeches for them, and essays I wrote for them on their graduations. Also for Shain, one I had written on our family dog that had passed since Jaden's graduation, and one extra for Jaden on the meaning of Schechianu - the Blessing of the First. I also threw in some family stories and letters their grandparents had written for them, and some first day of school letters, etc. I have been writing to them for a lifetime.

So in my IRL Book Club, when I write to the large group, monthly or so, I am always sending out spiritual missives and messages of hope and love and inspiration. I do love that people love these, and that they are moved. I do feel like my voice and role right now is one of hope and faith in these troubled times, and that I am needed to help keep people afloat. I see that as one way I can give. And I know there is at least a book or two in me for the world. My father always wanted me to publish my essays. He has loved the two I wrote for my mother, and all of the Spirituality and Parenting essays. I wrote one once on Spirituality and Parenting. I stopped the essays awhile back. But now I write reviews... And some of you have seen me wax extemporaneously. I think you guys know I can go off on something, usually wholly not related to the book itself, so you guys have all gotten a flavor of this. Jason has certainly seen it so I am not surprised he flagged it, even though it was just a guess. It was a good one. I have been a fiction lover, but never a fiction writer. And a non-fiction writer, but I generally hate to read the stuff. Funny, huh? But a good non-fiction will in fact grab me. When they are special, they are special.

I felt so deeply for Tess, and I related to her as a fellow outcast. I think the book also opened my young eyes to the huge obstacles women faced back in those times. Hardy was my favorite author in high school, and I read a great many of his classics but I held a special place in my heart for Tess.

Lyn (lynm) | 1123 comments Looks like it's time for me to tell my lie...

When I told my IRL book group I hadn't read The Grapes of Wrath they were shocked. Maybe I'll get to it one day, as I do enjoy Steinbeck's writing.

I absolutely love a little magic in my books. Alice Hoffman is one of my favorite authors and magical realism is one of my favorite genres.

I have read all but one of Jane Austen's books. I haven't read Persuasion yet, so number three is my lie.

Yes, but to be fair, even most people who know me IRL would have guessed the same as you and Theresa! It wasn't something I'd have done on my own, and I certainly wasn't very good at it. I plan to turn it into a humorous speech (I've done it once straight, but want to see if I can make my first climb and backward rappel funny with some tweaking.) I did get the Australian rappel down, though, but never did it again.

For some reason, my first thought is Jane Austen, but I can't really describe why. I also know that you like Pride and Prejudice. So....Elizabeth Bennett?

message 96: by Jason (new)

Jason Oliver | 3046 comments This has stalled a bit, so I am gonna change it up a bit.

I have chosen a literary character that I think most are familiar with. Feel free to ask any question. I will plug the question into chat gpt and ask it to answer the question as said character. I will edit the answer enough so as not to give away the character too easily.

4/30 Post your questions through the day. I will answer all questions at the end of the day.
5/1 Submit your guesses. Ask more questions. I will try to answer questions throughout the day. At the end of the day, I will reveal who I am.

Alas, dear sir, you are mistaken. I am honored that you have guessed a character in one of the popular novels of my era. I would offer you an opportunity to pose a question, but my siblings and I have arranged to attend a balloon ascension party in Hyde Park. Our escorts have arrived.
