Francesca | 10 comments Lmk because I heard it is hard to understand the first few times different phrases and words are mentioned.

juls ౨ৎ˖ ࣪⊹ | 238 comments not really like i read the six of crows but not shadow and bone and it's all perfectly clear just one thing: i have watched the tv shows so i know i little of shadow ad bone theoretically but i don't know if it's count cause it's not the book right? so yeah i think that you could read it seperatly

Aleksandra (avaleva38) | 125 comments i mean, you can, but it still will be better to understand it if you read s&b first

Giovanna Braun Nope! Technically, it is first chronologically but I read six of crows first and understood everything perfectly.

Plume No you don't "need" to read S&B first. However, the Grisha lore is explained more in details in S&B. Also if you are planning on reading the Grisha trilogy, it's better to do it before to avoid spoilers. There are also Easter Eggs and references in SoC that really pay off from having read Grisha.

I agree! Also from a world building POV, I thought it gave extra context particularly to the magic system

Liesel | 78 comments I think it might be helpful—I just delved into Six of Crows without having read the Shadow and Bone trilogy. It’s not absolutely necessary, but it might be easier to get into SoC if you're already familiar with the worldbuilding and magic system. Either way, have fun with it!

Plume Also, SoC assumes that you are familiar with the magic system, as others above have said. You're supposed to know what the Grisha orders are and what Ravka is and the lore with the events of the trilogy. They are such fast reads tbh and you can only benefit from reading them.

✿Della✿ (of The Hollow) Well now I know why I'm so confused in SoC. I guess the author has a reason to assume I already understand the magic system. 😅

fatima (fatimatbooks) | 25 comments You don't really need to, you'll still be able to understand it but reading the trilogy will be helpful in some ways
I read the trilogy first and really enjoyed it so I say go for the trilogy first!
