I'd recommend John Prebble's FIRE & SWORD trilogy which is excellent.

I've been scanning this thread wondering if anyone else has discovered N. Gemini Sasson and am so glad she's mentioned. I find her writing so delightful and not to be missed. She's very good and has helped to clear out the shadows of history I was not very clear about.
