The lone wolf. Good guys win. Breakneck plots with edge-of-your-seat action. Brutal, capable, moral heroes who don't mind killing bad guys outside the law. Surely there must be others? Tired of the political thrillers.

Give these a try...WITHOUT REMORSE by Tom Clancy - introduction and origin of John Clark, a decorated Navy SEAL during Vietnam who went "off the grid" to become a Cold War CIA operative. Clark pops up from time to time in Clancy's series featuring his Jack Ryan character.
PLUM ISLAND by Nelson DeMille - the first book in the John Corey series where Corey, a maverick, smart-mouthed NYPD detective on leave after a shooting incident, gets pulled into an investigation that pits him against national security assets. If you like this one there are six other books in the series to enjoy.
AVENGER (2003) and THE COBRA (2010), both written by Frederick Forsyth. Not a series but the main characters from both books are linked by a shared past. Both books have action that is "outside the law" but there is more mano-on-mano stuff in the first one.
