just as I'm trying to set up a Kindle too. where do people buy their eBooks from other than Amazon because it's the only one I know of
You can get free ebooks and audiobooks from your local library using Overdrive and the Libby app.Or and Audible subscription for audiobooks.
Libro.fm does audiobook subscriptions too, and you can choose a local bookstore to support through them.Other big booksellers like Barnes & Noble sell e-books. You can support a local bookstore of your choice with e-book purchases through Kobo or Bookshop.org.
Some libraries also offer e-books and audiobooks through Hoopla, although Hoopla's pricing for libraries has been forcing a lot of them [including mine] to cut ties.

Hopefully, more authors will start using it. There's also Kobo, and you can see on the book page which ones have DRM and which ones don't. I can't use Kobo though since I can't get Adobe Digital Editions to work on my computer.
I rarely buy ebooks from Amazon except the rare free ebook, but they’re now only going to be an option when I have a free KU trial. I won't even pay for a discounted trial anymore.

They're basically making themselves an inconvenient and irrelevant source to buy ebooks.
