The Motif (theme) for July is ... “Single Day Story”

Read a book that takes place over the course of a single day.

Share with us! Which book did you read and what did you think of it.

The Regulators by Richard Bachman (aka Stephen King)

It’s certainly true that, under the Bachman pseudonym, King’s writing becomes darker. This book is a prime example of that. There are no small number of victims, either by a harrowing death, or through a as just as harrowing life.

The story takes place all within one day, though the reader is given a background of sorts through Audrey Wyler’s journal and by a letter written to her by someone from who she tries to get information. But because it is all happening within the span of one day, the horror is unrelenting. The characters are given almost no breathing room as they try to fight back.

But neither is the reader. It’s one thing after the other, so the story can get a bit mind-numbing at times. Plus, it gives you little time to get to know the characters. There were a few that I felt I was beginning to like, but it never got much further than that.

So, while an entertaining read, it’s not one of my favorite King books. It’s been years since I read it, so it’ll be interesting rereading its linked book, Desperation.

My pick was Tilt by Emma Pattee, which was about a woman making her way home across the rubble of an earthquake-leveled city.
Sounds thrilling?
Well, spoiler alert - it wasn't. Not at all. If you're expecting solid disaster fiction, you're in for a sore disappointment. Yes, there's an earthquake that collapsed half the city, killed a lot of people and caused tsunamis wrecking the coastline - but the tension of such an event never once translated off of the pages. Instead it served as mere backdrop for the FMC ruminating about her life. She was an extremely bland, utterly unlikable character living a mediocre life - a life which she complained about, yet barely did anything to change.
The novel also colossally failed to tie up loose ends.
Did the husband make it? Whatever... Honestly, by the end, I didn't even care about either one of them.
Did her friend find her daughter? The IKEA worker was the only character that felt somewhat realistic and as such, her unresolved story line bugged me.

Save your time for some better read...

I enjoyed this pretty much on par with most of King’s stuff I’ve read. I feel like I maybe should have read this one right after (or at least closer to) reading Desperation, because I forgot most of what happens in that one other than a very vague notion. d

Jerikay Eldeen | 34 comments For July I read the book Resist: A Story of D-Day by Alan Gratz. I actually chose this for a goodreads challenge, and it happened to match this challenge as well, since it takes place in the span of one day, or rather overnight. It is about a little girl in Germany who's on a mission to save her mom from being executed by the Germans. She happens to be traveling on foot through the country and meets some of the American soldiers who are landing on D-Day. I would recommend this book if you are interested in WWII literature. It is a children's book, which was a plus for me with all the other books I'm currently reading, I didn't want anything to lengthy.

This challenge was one of the hardest to find a suitable book for, but it helped I had read this author before.
Took me awhile to get through this one, had to interrupt for a book club book, and the story writing was long on detail, so not a quick read. Still a good book, but could use some more concise wording. My review here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Indy_Chick | 81 comments Challenge complete! I agree that this month's challenge was really hard to find a book for--let alone one that I was even remotely interested in reading--so I read The Night Before Christmas by Clement C. Moore.
