It is a decision they all need to consider and then make. Gonzo was close to Skip. I think staying in rehab may have hurt him in the long run. He would internalize letting another person down if he didn't go to the funeral and if he wasn't there to support and comfort Sam and her family. The same is true for Elin and Freddie. How would they enjoy their honeymoon if they knew that close friends were hurting and they weren't there to support them?
Gonzo had made great progress in the program so far. I know this is rare for him to leave and return, but Gonzo is determined to finish the treatment and move on with his life. It could have set him back if he had not been allowed to attend and honor Skip, who had helped him.Elin and Freddy were there for Sam as well as to honor Skip. To me, the Italian honeymoon was a waste of money as they spent almost all of it in bed. They could have just booked an upscale hotel in the US and saved a lot of money.
This series makes only a passing attempt at being realistic. These are just additional examples of the unrealistic situations on the books and they aren't even the most egregious ones. Elin and Freddie coming back makes sense due to Freddie's closeness to Sam and Skip, but Gonzo being allowed to leave rehab and come back is not.
