in my experience (I've read verity and reminders of him), she has an original style which puts her in between the romance genre and literary fiction. if we wanna get technical, I'd call her part of the "Splitstream genre".
in my experience, a lot of hate came from people who approached her books expecting romance novels, since this is how they get marketed, and so the readers got pretty... "traumatized" by the stories. they are really a long series of turn offs.
if you wanna read something from her, try Reminders of Him, it's my favourite novel OAT. but approach it as literary fiction.



AND THEN THE AUTHOR WROTE:

But Verity is so damn good. And the casting they chose are the A-list that we all love so much!
