"alternative" to The Bell Jar

I recently heard a discussion about a metaphor from the Bell Jar, that is about life being like a fig tree and each branch representing a different path, and how our decisions/choices make use take one path vs other. I would love to have that sort of a book at this point in my life. BUT I also read that it has a dark tone with mental health problems, suicidal ideation, etc. I definitely can't handle that right now. Is there a book with a similar content of life choices, and different paths, but strikes a more optimistic, hopeful tone? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!
