Abbey | 19 comments Hi all,

I'd appreciate some insight on the stage I'm currently stuck at.... whether or not to hire an editor to review my manuscript. I've had helpful beta readers, but I feel that I need a deeper review.

Has anyone worked with a developmental editor? Any feedback?

Abbey

Literary editor here, and I would like to provide some insight. Hiring a developmental editor is highly recommended for debut writers, even though beta readers provide feedback that can be helpful, developmental editors go in depth diving into each elements of the story — character development, plot, setting, flow and so much more. They even brainstorm possible solutions with you.

You can check out my page https://www.narrativenook.blog/servic... to see how I carry out a developmental edit and if it is what you’re looking for.

Let’s think that you want to hire one, ensure that you hire someone who has extensive knowledge in the genre that you’re writing and do ask for a sample edit from them.

I hope this help you:)

Hi Abbey,

Editors can be expensive, but if you are thinking about self-publishing, a good editor is absolutely worth it. There are different types of editors who focus on different areas of your manuscript. I'll link some helpful articles from my Substack and website below.

Hope this helps and best of luck with your writing!
