I'm still planning on coming back to this. My reading has been wonky this last week.

Chapters 1-6 => (view spoiler)[Ok, so here are my thoughts...

I almost quit reading after the prologue. I don't like the mom. And I don't like how the entire thing was blaming Wren for not wanting to do everything that she wanted to do. She knew he had a business in Alaska. She knew that he was left this from his dad. She didn't like it because she's clearly materialistic. Wren is the opposite. He wanted her to come back, she didn't want to. That's not 100% his fault and I don't like that it was portrayed that way.

Now onto the rest...I'm getting a lot of Cash by Jessica Peterson vibes in this one. Mom leaves dad, takes daughter with, and then refuses to allow dad to visit or see daughter, withholds letters, gifts, etc...then dad dies and daughter inherits the business and she's a bitch to everyone because she thinks her dad was a dead beat. Turns out it was the mom. Now that one is a western, but I'm getting the same vibes.

I'm not a fan of Calla right now. She is blaming her dad for everything, but why didn't she go visit her dad? Everything is his fault. EVERYTHING!! I have no doubt that we will find things out and it will turn out that it wasn't all his fault, lol. But her constantly bringing up things about her dad and all the things he didn't do is honestly getting REALLY ANNOYING! Great the mom sent him pictures, but then stopped in 8th grade. I already know a bit about Alaska and the bush and I already knew that he would be super busy flying people and supplies all over ALL THE TIME! So I don't blame him for working. This is why I don't like the mom. I don't think she did a lot to foster a relationship between daughter and dad.

I'm sure that's because she still loved him (which Simon confirms) and he of course still loves her (I'm guessing this is why it's complicated with Agnes). I don't know, I feel like the constant repetition of some things is really grating on my nerves right now.

Also, Calla knew where she was going. She's flying in 3 inch heels??? Really??? She's superficial like her mom I feel like.

Now let me give thoughts on Jonah. I read through some reviews and everyone talks about what a jerk he is. I don't think that. I think this is a guy that thinks Calla deserted her dad. Calla never visited. Jonah lost his dad so he's protective of Wren and I'm guessing he thinks Calla is to blame for a lot. Not to mention, I'm guessing Wren is like a father figure to him (this is also the same thing that happened in Cash by Jessica Peterson). I know he was a jerk to her with her luggage, but he's not wrong. She's so proud about all the makeup she brought and thinks how she has so much more left at home, thus why I'm getting superficial vibes.

I'm going to take a break from this and read something else at the same time. I can already tell I'm irritated with Calla and it would seem this book is told all from her POV and that might not be good for this book lol. So to prevent my feelings to get any bigger, I'm going to take a breather and come back for the next 6 chapters sometimes tomorrow...hopefully (hide spoiler)]

Just saying, Calla has a remarkable character development arc, just like every K.A. Tucker FMC I read, and you get a lot of "learning as Calla learns and understands" vibes, also like Romeria and Abbi.
She isn't without her faults and she definitely comes in smug and on top before she changes

I have no doubt you are right, Grace. The problem is, I don't want to sit in her smug brain right now, and since we only get her POV, it's going to be rough for me. The way she is written is a huge turn-off for me in an FMC.

Calla is honestly not my favourite FMC and it took some time to get used to her smugness and for her growth to happen, so I 100% get you.
I am just giving you hope.
But yes, going slow with this is reasonable because of Calla but also because of the heavy worldbuilding.

Chapters 7-12 => (view spoiler)[I still don't like Calla. She really is very superficial in a lot of ways. Jonah, I thought, had her pegged spot on when he went on his rant at the grocery store. Shes quick to blame everything on her dad, but yet doesn't acknowledge that her mom could've also played a huge part until Agnes says something to her.

It was refreshing to see that she wants to build a website for her dad. I can see the groundwork being laid for her to stay in Alaska with Jonah. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 13-20 => (view spoiler)[Why do I feel like the cancer is a lot worse than Wren is telling people? The cough seems to be pronounced. I hope they are able to at least talk more before something happens. I have a feeling that her dad won't make it out of this book...ugh.

I do enjoy the banter between Calla and Jonah. I'm coming around slightly to Calla, but I do still find her to be annoying. She is really materialistic about so many things.

Chapters 21-end => (view spoiler)[Holy hell...that was a rough ending. I was really hoping that her dad would live and they would grow a relationship or something. I'm not sure why I thought that. I'm glad that she was able to get some sort of relationship with her dad back.

I enjoyed how her and Jonah's relationship went. It was clear he had an attraction to her. I'm not sure why so many people didn't like him, because for me, he made this book. While I didn't mind Calla towards the end of the book, I still am not 100% a fan of her. I don't like that she went back to Toronto. I get that the story probably needed that, though. Maybe she wouldn't have realized she loved Alaska had she not left.

I also feel like she takes on too much of her mom's materialistic ways. Maybe she'll finally let it all go when she goes back with Jonah.

I'm glad that her mom got to go and see Wren one last time. That broke me. Well, reading that Wren started to sob is what broke me. Ugh...I'm not going to jump into the next book, even though there is a part of me that wants to. I can't risk crying again...my eyes are too puffy lol (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 1-8 => (view spoiler)[I'm still not a huge fan of Calla. She does complain a lot about all the comforts she is accustomed to. I realize that this is new for her, but at the same time, it's not really. She has an idea of what she is getting. I also feel like at first she was very much pushing the suburban subdivisions, because it would make her happy. Interesting she mentions Eagle River. My cousin lived there and I've been there :)

While I do think that Jonah should've talked to her about that property, I also think he's the one trying to find a compromise. She was only trying to find houses that would make her happy, not a compromise. I'm glad that she realized that Jonah wouldn't be happy in a subdivision.

I'm also sick of hearing about what her parents think. Ugh, I worry she's going to listen to them, and we all know that her mother hated Alaska. (hide spoiler)]

This was a weird part for me too! I think it shows how different they are and likely want different things. I think I was struggling to see how they would align and stay together in this one. I was also starting to question whether I liked Jonah as much as I thought. He definitely should have talked to her about the property beforehand. That said, it's pretty darn clear that he's not someone who would enjoy the suburbs. It just felt like two different people with completely different preferences and goals, other than liking each other and trying to make it work. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[I went back to my notes and one of the things i said was that I made the mistake of going in thinking book 2 is more romance oriented and it was not at all, it was very Calla character driven.

We had a lot of thoughts about how Calla was feeling and their relationship, and we did have questions about Jonah and his behaviours. But we'll see what Jamie thinks (hide spoiler)]

Ok well I'll just let you both know that (view spoiler)[ I am 100% a Jonah supporter, lol. I don't think he will do anything that could really upset me, but I guess we will see. While I understand that there is room for improvement in certain areas (communication, for example), we are only getting Calla's perspective, and honestly, between her mom's influence on her and her background, I don't find myself sympathetic towards her.

HOWEVER....I also see that she does seem to realize how insane some of the things she holds her hat on and does walk herself back, so I can appreciate that.

I do see that she loves him. I also see that he loves her. And I can see that they both have some issues they have to work through. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 9-16 => (view spoiler)[ I have to say that I found Calla having to deal with the goat hilarious lol. I also understand why she was upset that Jonah didn't call her when he made a change in his plan.

Just like Alaska is a change for Calla, being in a commited relationship is a change for Jonah :) (hide spoiler)]

Thru 22 => (view spoiler)[Jonah was going to ask her to marry him, wasn't he?? And then she freaks out because she might be pregnant, and all her true feelings come out...

Thru 24 => (view spoiler)[Yep he was. I'm actually kind of happy Calla overheard him talking with Marie. He's not wrong in a lot of what he said. And I get why he was turning down jobs. Calla complains A LOT about things.

Now Marie's responses were because she cares for Jonah, but I'm with her. And she does spend money on things that aren't really a priority. I think part of the problem is, we don't know what Wren actually left her. I think that would give some context. I get why he doesn't want to spend money. I also get why she might want to.

But again, these two need to actually talk about some of this stuff. And I think this book would be worlds better with Jonah's POV. We can only draw conclusions with what he might be thinking or why he's doing the things he is, but we don't know what's going through his mind. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 25-32 => (view spoiler)[God she's insufferable. She literally tells him she hates living there, and then wants to take it back as soon as she realizes all the things Jonah did for her birthday.

Not to mention, she complains about everything, it seems. And instead of confronting these things, she buries it and then they explode.

The jealousy with Marie is starting to drive me crazy, too. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 33 => (view spoiler)[Jonah hit it right on the head. I'm so glad he threw it back in her face, because she hasn't given Alaska a chance. She's always talking about the house they are in as temporary...only a year or two. She balks at everything to try and make it work. She only does things when forced. Chapters 34-end => (view spoiler)[Honestly, I'm so glad that Jonah yelled at her because had he not I'm not sure she would've pulled her head out of her ass and gotten her shit together!!! God this woman drives me fucking batty!!!

Just when I'm starting to like her, she goes and says that Roy is a "bad person". WTF?!?!?!??! Because he confided in her that he had a moment of weakness and beat up his wife's ex boyfriend and in the process also hit her?? That he realized he was wrong and was never going to be like his dad and so he gave her the divorce and left. God this woman is such a bitch!! She really thinks she's all that. Ugh...

In saying that, I'm glad that she pulled her head out of her ass and is making it work. I'm glad that she's still nice to Roy since you know he's a bad guy and all that 🙄. God I can't believe she said that. I was actually starting to like her a bit. Nope...my initially gut instinct was spot on with this one. (hide spoiler)]

She worries to much about her mother and then not being her mother. But leave it to my man Jonah to give her his mind and she comes around, lol.

I do love Roy. And I'm glad that her relationship with him is good in this one. Cause she made me right mad at the end of the last book with her...he's not a good man. He built her a fucking mantel for her fireplace for a christmas present!!!! Ok sorry...I'm digressing. I'm glad he's getting a relationship with his daughter. He deserves all the good things.

I'm curious about Marie's book. I'm also hoping we still get updates with all of these folks from these first 3 books. (hide spoiler)]

Thru chapter 2 => Ok, this isn't looking good. This story line is not going to work with me if it continues this way. (view spoiler)[The fact that Marie runs with what Harry and his mom said about Tyler and this dog is such a joke. God, there is no way this is his dog and it's so clear these people are using one of their dogs to shut their competition down.

I get why Tyler is pissed at her. I would be too.

But what's getting me is all of Marie's high and mighty thoughts. God these FMC's in this series are rough...I guess we have another one where the MMC is a lot better than the FMC. And a book only told from the FMC's POV. Wonderful

Not to mention, the pining on Jonah is killing me too. Get over yourself girl...HE'S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU!!! (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 3-6 => (view spoiler)[ I really don't like her when she talks about how she feels about Jonah. It just rubs me wrong. Maybe because we already know he's with Calla, they are married now, and reading about her feelings after the first couple of chapters is getting old.

Now that she is helping with the race, it seems to have died down some. I, of course, like Tyler, and I do wish we had his POV.

I believe that Harry will cause issues down the line for Marie. I'm guessing it's when he realizes that something is going on between these two and he's upset, jealous, or whatever it is. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 7-17 => (view spoiler)[I like Tyler, but I don't like the widow aspect of this story. I'm clearly not looking for a slow, angsty, wishy-washy romance right now.

Marie isn't wrong, he's still living with the dead. This doesn't make me want to read and cheer for them. He's living with the dead, and she is sitll pining for fucking Jonah. We are 57% of the way in and this happens...

Roy is speaking "As if I had a choice in the matter. You know Calla. Always gets what she wants, eventually."

Marie - "She does, doesn't she?" A spark of envy stirs inside me. As I look around this perfect life, she seems to have gotten everything she could've wanted, and a lot she never imagined. I feel Roy's shrewd gaze on me. He's no fool. Thankfully, he keeps whatever thoughts inside his head to himself.

Actually, I wish he would've said it, because it's getting old for me. This is why so many people have issues with married men or women being friends with the opposite sex. THIS!!! And I'm reading a book about how this women still can't get over loving Jonah. How she knows everything about Jonah. Knows Jonah's quirks.

Chapters 19-end => (view spoiler)[ It was ok. I'm sorry, i didn't like this one. Her running out of the bar, crying her eyes out because Jonah and Calla are having a baby, to then literally have sex with Tyler in the parking lot...lol what the fuck ever.

Then they do it again a week or so later and now this time Tyler isn't ready and calls it off, so that we have all the angst of this AGAIN, to then at 98% have Tyler decide, no i want to be with you, I LOVE YOU...

I swear, I laughed out loud, because if this is all love, I would want to run far away from it. I get his wife died, I get that his son died, I get that it's hard to move on and feel like you're leaving that behind.

I'm going to blame my mood on wanting more of a romance vs an angsty, I don't know what this was. Emotional?? I wasn't emotional though so I'm not sure that's the word.

And the ending?!?!?! That was for the birds. They spent the whole book apart and we get a chapter with her waiting for him at the end, and she basically says she's pregnant, and it's done. I feel robbed, actually. (hide spoiler)]
