Although I read the Marie-Jonah conversation yesterday, I am pissed.
1) why was he confiding in Marie in such deep and personal things and not even attempt to discuss them with Calla?

2) How does Marie know about the shopping? She wouldn't have unless Jonah told her, so he is the one who is out of line, and why the hell is he complaining about his partner to another woman clearly in love with him?

3) I feel that we barely saw Jonah and had conversations with him in this book. And Calla says how he's been missing and gone. And my dude doesn't pick up the phone to update his itinerary... BUT he has the time to divulge such stuff and have a deep conversation with Marie?? While his partner barely sees him and talks to him??


So Calla's frustration bubbling up and just exploding at her birthday, I hate that she dismissed it because she felt guilty that she misunderstood.
Her feelings are still real all the same even if he didn't leave for work. He told her he did, and he left her on her birthday. He could have taken her with him to the inn and surprised her with Diana and the jeep there...

I think it's clear how Marie feels about him but we're also only getting Calla's point of view. This is addressed in one of the books, I truly can't remember if it's the novella or this one, but they talk about him and Marie. Marie has become a friend of his. I vent to my friends about certain things and honestly, sometimes I vent to my friends before talking to Ben about it. This is sometimes because the things are trivial and I realize that after, but in the moment I just need a good venting. I think it gets complicated because it's male and female and one of the people is interested in the other. I think a lot of us have a friend we just talk with though and while it's not ideal that it's Marie, I don't find it that wild.

Yes, we don't get a lot of Jonah in the book. He's certainly away a lot.

I kind of had this feeling with several situations in the book, Calla dismissing her feelings and, as it's said in the book, "you'll get used to it", or something along those lines. It does at times feel incredibly dismissive and as though she just has to figure it out.

Don't get me wrong! I agree!
(view spoiler)[I have stuff I need to process before talking to my partner, especially when they're emotionally loaded.
And I am not opposed at all with the male-female friendship.
It's just that Marie has feeling for him.

But it's the fact that he talked about sooooo many things with Marie, but I don't see real communication or quality time between him and Calla.
I feel she's alone.

ANd that's exactly it. We are getting her POV, so getting her experience. And her experience is lonely.
She's sacrificing and giving so much from herself, and he is obilivious... "you'll get used to it"

For Jonah it isn't a change. Just a different house. He is still doing the same things.
For Calla, it's a different house, different community, different lifestyle, different food, different climate and weather, different sleep cycle, different surrounding, different social life, different daily life....
He loves her and has good intentions, but I don't think he truly realises the magnitude of this. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[I feel like she's sacrificing a lot in this relationship and is clearly changing a lot of her lifestyle! I agree, for him these are small changes. He's been living this way, somewhat in this area, for quite a while. He gets to talk to people while he's working, at drops and other communities, forging relationships, while she's at home, feeling incredibly lonely.

I think he sees her as a friend and that's it. I don't want to stereotype or make excuses but guys can be blind to this sometimes.

I think the communication gets better but I do agree, they only touch on the surface when talking about what's happening or wrong at certain points of the book. The quality time is definitely lacking.

I sort of left the 3 books about Calla and Jonah being ok with how it went I think but also feeling like she made the best out of a not so great situation. I think maybe I wanted more for her somehow. But it's a journey of them trying to figure out how to make this relationship work and truly it felt very real to me. In comparison to other romance books I've read where the sex is explosive, they barely fight or if they do it's over situations I can't necessarily relate to, them struggling over work-life balance and making time for each other felt good to see.

I can see how you would want to take a break after. I sort of felt the same with Marie's books and wanted to read something different before jumping in with you.

Haha. Yes! I couldn’t not start it. I needed to jump right in. As much as I was kind of annoyed with aspects of their relationship I needed to continue.

I loved this "natural" proposal it was so organic and normal, and so them and their relationship

I think I made the mistake of going in thinking this one will be more romance focused and then halfway through realised it wasn't.
I also think I needed the tension and romance this week, and I didn't get it, so I should have chosen a different book.

That said, I loved the book even if I found it lacking in places.

I don't think her journey and finding herself and her place in Alaska was given proper attention.
It's like we brushed it over by saying she needs more people around, so she'll renovate and build cabins, and she is working on marketing.
I didn't get to see how that experience was for her, how she really felt, and how different it was from her farming and selling and taking care of Roy and stuff.

I like that we saw this side of Roy and how he showed up for her.

But I also feel the ending was abrupt....

As soon as I finished I was like I NEED MORE OF THESE TWO!
I don't know if I should expect the same mood for the novella or we will actually get the romance and stuff. (hide spoiler)]

Absolutely LOVED this one.
I did go in with an open heart and open mind, and I think the break after read Jonah and Calla's story helped

This had a different pace while still being character-driven

It was so real and raw and yes absolutely what it looks like for a 38 years old with family responsibilities dating and a 37 y.o. who lost his wife and son trying to put himself out there.

I expected they would talk about child loss between them and concern for her life and them losing the child, especially that her sisters and mom lost children, and he lost his wife and son.
That didn't happen, and I can understand how heavy it could be to tackle this topic, but I am also grateful for the hope and faith that they're both all in and not worrying about that, they just want a family.

The "Then end it" was my undoing. I knew from page 1 it will amount to that in the end and when it happened I was giggling kicking my feet. Like YESS that's the moment.

They're so natural together and I absolutely love them.

Yup this and the novella are tied for my favourite of the series.
I think I might like Tyler more than Jonah too. Probably because we saw more depth from him. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[I completely agree. I think shows the realities of dating at that age. You're trying to have a career but also know time is somewhat running out if you're planning to have a family. Also, the family members constantly trying to set her up with coworkers and friends is hilarious.

I kind of expected them to talk about child loss as well because I assume he'll likely be a little nervous with his pregnancy and labour. I feel like that's a conversation that will happen but we didn't see it in this book.

Because he lost his wife and son during childbirth, I found it a little odd that he would be all for getting Marie pregnant so quickly. He ended up saying he wasn't ready for it but that was surrounding the relationship, not actively having a baby. He said he'd support her either way but I thought his concerns surrounding labour and child loss would be a bigger concern.

YES! The "Then end it" was amazing. I was impatiently waiting for it. I really enjoyed this one, more than Jonah and Calla I think.

There was one part that I can't remember exactly in this one where Calla meets Jonah at the hanger to say goodbye and I didn't love it. It reminded me of the mixed feelings I have surrounding them. While I loved aspects of their story, they were as natural as Marie and Tyler. I didn't feel the chemistry as much as I felt with Marie and Tyler I think.

I'm in agreement. I liked Tyler more than Jonah for sure.

This series has made me seriously want to go to Alaska and watch the Iditarod. It gave me a whole new appreciation for dog sled teams and vets! (hide spoiler)]

I definitely agree that I felt Tyler-Marie chemistry more. but I do think that has smtg with opposites attracts as well.

also, after they had sex the first time he did tell her that "I felt like I was replacing him"
he felt more guilty about a potential baby then he let on.
but a conversation was warranted and we weren't privy to it.
I guess he was swept away in the moment. I forgot but maybe he mentions how when he's with her he forgets other things?
