Perks Moderator | 594 comments Book #2 of the February 2025 Book of the Month is Crying in H Mart Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner by Michelle Zauner

The New York Times bestseller from the Grammy-nominated indie rockstar Japanese Breakfast, an unflinching, deeply moving memoir about growing up mixed-race, Korean food, losing her Korean mother, and forging her own identity in the wake of her loss.

In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humour and heart, she tells of growing up the only Asian-American kid at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother’s particular, high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother’s tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food. As she grew up, moving to the east coast for college, finding work in the restaurant industry, performing gigs with her fledgling band – and meeting the man who would become her husband – her Koreanness began to feel ever more distant, even as she found the life she wanted to live.

It was her mother’s diagnosis of terminal pancreatic cancer, when Michelle was twenty-five, that forced a reckoning with her identity and brought her to reclaim the gifts of taste, language, and history her mother had given her.

Vivacious, lyrical and honest, Michelle Zauner’s voice is as radiantly alive on the page as it is onstage. Rich with intimate anecdotes that will resonate widely, Crying in H Mart is a book to cherish, share, and reread.

Susan I read this book last year and truly enjoyed the story! It made me cry multiple times as well and that's really hard to to do :)

Wendy | 3 comments I listened to the audiobook recently (in December) which I highly recommend because the author narrates the audiobook. While her voice is somewhat stilted at times, I appreciated her reading of the the Korean passages and the inflection of her voice during some of the more emotionally intense moments just broke me open. I do have a soft spot for stories centered on mother-daughter relationships and theirs was such a tumultuous, heart-breaking and yet beautiful one. I was not familiar with Japanese Breakfast before reading Zauner’s memoir and now I am a new fan of their music. I am looking forward to this discussion!

liv bellanco | 1 comments I read this one when it came out, since I’m a fan of her music, but this is the perfect opportunity for me to listen to the audio book! I just downloaded it from my local library today, and I love it so far!

Cathie (catitude) | 13 comments This was an ok read for me. It didn't move me the way I thought it would have despite there being some beautiful writing passages describing the authors memories of her mother's interactions with her and her own insights into how her mother impacted her life. Saying goodbye is never easy and never a short process. People's lives / souls remain with us for a very long time, sometimes forever.

Although this book was a good read while I was reading it, I don't think I will be remembering anything in particular about it a year from now, hence the 3 star, it's "ok" rating.

B Hockley | 11 comments This book fell flat for me. There were so many beautifully written passages that lost their significance due to repetition or seeming contradiction and I found myself wanting to like it more than I actually did.
