Characters that stayed with you

What's somthing that happaaned to a character in a book that kept you up at night or just stuck with you for a long time?

For me, it was the Science Fiction series The Hyperion Cantos 4-Book Bundle: Hyperion, The Fall of Hyperion, Endymion, The Rise of Endymion. I was a newly minted father and was all thumbs. I was so afraid at the time, I did not want to hold my baby because I was a mess and terrified of accidentally hurting him.

I was reading the book and there is a scene where a father is watching his daughter age backward and there is nothing he can do about it. Dan Simmons did such amazing job of the description of the pain of watching this and no ability to help. I burst into tears because at that moment I truly understood what the character Saul was going through. That section of the book has stayed with me for 30 years.

Holding a baby for the first time can definitly be scary! And a feeling of helplessness I think is also one of the hardest things to deal with. That scene sounds like something that could really stick with you over time.
