Wait, what?!?!? For Draw 2s, the book doesn't even have to match the card? Does it have to match one of them? Or we could literally pick something that only works for 2 and then use it for both a 5 and a 7 which are typically harder? (I'm not suggesting we do this because it feels like cheating to me even if it is within the rules.) My mind is just blown right now.

I did a double check...I said it wrong in my message earlier...we don't have to use 2 different books...we can use the same book for both spots...but they do have to match the card. 2 spots are basically free...3 spots for 1 book. You did the record correctly...sorry for confusing.

Maria Jo | 87 comments Less than one week till Uno starts! What are you all doing until then? Do you read as much as usual leading up to a big challenge like this, or do you take it easy and do other things so you're ready to read as much as you can when the challenge starts?

message 55: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments I'm planning to finish up my 2 current reads and MAYBE squeeze in another to get a blackout on my Book Tac Toe card (a monthly challenge I do with a 3x3 card like a Bingo card). I started out the month really strong but I've sort of hit a rut. UNO always helps me pick up the pace. I get my February Book Tac Toe card on the January 28th, so once I get that, I'll also be picking out some books that fit my prompts and work for our UNO hands too. I can't wait for UNO to start.

Tammie | 1392 comments Same here…trying to finish my white elephant challenge and drafting a few challenges for AMMP. Still have quite a bit to do.

Looking forward to UNO of course!

Maria Jo | 87 comments I find I become overwhelmed quickly reading for too many challenges, so I mostly just do the big team challenges now. Tammie, any hints you can give us for what AMMP is planning next?

Our next theme is ‘What’s Your Sign?’…you’ll see zodiac themed challenges through May. Something for everyone:)

message 60: by Maria Jo (new)

Maria Jo | 87 comments That sounds like fun! I'm glad you said something, my notifications aren't working, so I didn't see all the new AMMP challenge announcements!

message 61: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments This might be a silly question but what is AMMP?

I got my reading prompts for February today. The bad news (for me) is that I don't have anything that immediately jumps out at me for most of the prompts. The good news is that means I should have some flexibility (especially for the mini) because I just don't have books that I feel strongly committed to reading this month for other challenges.

So excited to start reading for UNO soon!

Hi Ashley....me too...3-1/2 days to go!

AMMP...A Million More Pages...is another reading group. GRs has a ton of them...many of us addicted~over~achiever~readers belong to several groups.
https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...

My challenge in a challenge is to find books that work for multiple challenges. I know that's weird...it keeps my brain super active...I love a good hunt. Ever need help finding a book for something?...my heaven is the search! Glad to help anytime :)

message 64: by Tammie (new)

Tammie | 1392 comments hehe...Maria Jo and I doing our thing at the same time :)

Not pacing or anything waiting for UNO to start!

message 65: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments My sister, Keri, who introduced me to UNO is in many of the GRs groups (apparently including that one) and does several of the challenges. I tend to get a bit overwhelmed when I try to do too many challenges. I always think there are so many fun ones but I just don't feel like I can keep up with it all.

Tammie - I really enjoy the search too, but may reach out if I need some help... especially when the mini comes around. First I have to see where I can fit my book club book, the color card I've already claimed for UNO, and my buddy read... and then I'll see what's left and go from there! I have some super random prompts like "Galentine's Day" which basically means female friendship has to be a major part of the story... but also some more specific title/cover related prompts like "heart on the cover" or "marriage word in the title".

8 more color cards to claim
4 Wild DRAW4
7 Green
3 Blue
9 Blue
1 Red

7 REV cards remaining. Keep your eyes peeled...if you see a book that's in a spot that you've read, we should consider moving it to REV instead...unless it's in a color spot.

Ashley Elig | 689 comments Do you still want us to hold off on claiming anything we won't be reading them in the first week? I guess I'm asking in general, but also specifically for colored cards and reverses.

Tammie | 1392 comments Ashley wrote: "Do you still want us to hold off on claiming anything we won't be reading them in the first week? I guess I'm asking in general, but also specifically for colored cards and reverses."

As most of us are veterans at UNO…this isn’t something you don’t already know…around the 12th-ish the mini comes along. Ideally we’ve read for about 1/2 of the cards in our deck at the official start of the mini…which is usually on the 15th-ish.

To answer your question Ashley, I’m fine with you picking more than 1 week…but we’ll need help from the entire team to complete the mini…

It’s my experience that if we can finish color cards and REV ahead of the mini, it’s less to have to match up…some of the mini tasks can be a bit difficult / different.

I totally realize that most of us read strictly what we want so the ‘ideal’ scenario isn’t always realistic.

All I suggest is that we remember the mini is around the corner…plan B may be necessary in order to finish.

I hope this lengthy answer answers your question…

Makes sense. I'll hold off from adding much else for now, as I'm a slower reader. I basically just have the books I will definitely be reading this month on there now like my book club book and buddy reads and things that aren't flexible so I'll definitely be reading them regardless of the mini. That being said, I still will have a few books that will be flexible-ish for the mini.

Tammie | 1392 comments Perfect Ashley

I just had a look at our WS.
We’re at 25% claimed…makes one week of reading…just where we need to be!

@Maryjo…could you move your First Lie Wins book to a REV spot IF you’ll finish after 2/2? I’m planning to read this book first and should finish at some point on the 2nd.

@ALL…keep your eyes peeled for other possible REVs

So popular!! My daughter already has a list of friends who will be reading this after her. She's her own librarian! :)
I listened to the full cast audiobook version of the 1st book with sound effects and everything. I was so immersed, it was great. I started book 2 but only got half way. It's red, so I might start again & sneak it in for this year's UNO....

Why have I never thought about the school year being different in Australia?!?!? I'm aware that the seasons are different and that Christmas is in the summer but for some reason it never occurred to me that the kids would still be off school in the summer... which would be our winter. I hope they get off to a good start.

message 87: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments I literally just finished up my last read of January... so I'll be starting 1 or 2 of my UNO reads today. I have to go pick my husband up from the airport in a couple of hours, so I'm not sure how much reading I'll do today... but I'm excited to start!

Yeah we're a bit upside down here :). Christmas in summer really is weird. The Santas still wear the full outfits in 40C (104F) & above heat and many people have traditional Christmas lunches with all the sides although a more traditional Aussie Christmas is now a bbq in the backyard while playing cricket :).

The kids went back alright. We're having a week of of 104F this week, so it's tough but luckily aircon has been invented here too :)

Tammie | 1392 comments description WS / numbers update

There's been a bit of discussion in the captains group as someone had a question about whether there was a limit for books we could read. There was a cap when we signed up of 30 books.

It's likely only a couple of us will come close to this, but I wanted to clarify that there is no cap on per books per person. This was just for the sign up to keep teams even. Please do plan to record all the books you read on the SS somewhere. Heavy readers...let's continue to keep a slow start to allow those with limited reading time to make choices first.

Second...you'll notice under 'draw2' entries I have revised the reader names in each case to have a '.' after the name on one of the entries...this keeps the tracking for number of books read under the team member section correct.

Let us know if you have questions about any of this.

message 95: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 689 comments I have another blue cover (can be used for 3) and at least one more reverse I tentatively plan to read. As I'm a slower reader, I'm kind of waiting to see what the mini throws at us before I put either on the spreadsheet.

My reading has kind of been all over the place yesterday and today. The state of our country has me alternating between trying to consume all the news and comprehend what is happening and then trying desperately to get lost in a book. My brain feels like it's going to explode, so hopefully that means I'll be getting a lot of reading done now.
