The Debate Club discussion
that is the definition of the bandwagon fallacy. just because some people are advocating for this does not justify it.

just answer the question. how is it just? i don't want to hear about the bible or personal beliefs. i want to hear why it is okay to ban books with sexual content for older, mature students.

Ah, thx
Censorship of anything is horrible. But I can see there will be exceptions but then youre in a slippery slope
saying that you should ban a book cause there is sex in it due to it being against your beliefs is like saying that the Bible should be banned cause it goes against the beliefs of others. if you disagree with is congratulations no one gives a shit. its your belief. Others can have their own that is different from yours
Jeremiah(God's Guy) wrote: Smut, porn, spice, whatever you wish to call it is wrong. You said you are a Christian. As a Christian, you should be against it. Even if it is not in your home. Ofc you aren't going to go into peoples houses and remove the books. It is their decision. But we can agree that it is evil, right?honestly, it isn't your place to tell me what i should/shouldn't believe as a christian. my relationship with god is literally only between me and god.
doesn't the bible also tell you not to eat meat? not to trim your beard? not to wear gold jewelry? do you trim your beard, jeremiah? do you wear gold?
you have to remember that the bible was not written in modern times. some things in the bible did not age well. some things are no longer relevant, as we do things completely differently than they did when the bible was written.
so in short, no, i do not agree that it is evil. i think books are literally just books. it's the people that add stigmas to them. the oxford book of american short stories is no more worthy of being read than red white and royal blue (side note: lovely book, would recommend, i js skimmed past the ''smut, porn, spice, whatever you wish to call it'' bits 🫶)
why do we need to discuss whether the bible is true? just because you do not believe in spicy romance books doesn't mean you tell others they can't read it because of your religious beliefs.
Personally I like to think that everybody should be their own moderator, and if someone enjoys reading smut (for example) they should be able to do so in peace because that's their choice. I definitely do not like the idea of one person or a group of people deciding who gets to read what because ultimately it's not your decision. Censorship is not good.(all of this said with love x)
Same lmao

I believe SOME books should be restricted but not banned. Like some books requiring a guardian signature to check out. This is simply for books with a lot of profanity though

I agree with things that are inappropriate being banned from schools and I feels some books should be more controlled or hard to get, since during a conversation about banned books I had in my college class the teacher brought in various banned books and most of them shouldn’t be such as Harry Potter, but one in particular The Turner Diaries, specifically want people to harm certain minorities and has almost step by step violent examples of how to do so, which is something I don’t think people need to have
I had to write this for the class I mentioned In most cases, I am against banning books. I have many reasons for this most of which are related to freedom of speech. I believe schools should have some restrictions on books that can be in stock, such as Sara J Mass should not be in the library of middle schools or elementary schools, but is fine for high school libraries. It is all about understanding what content and children that age likely won't be able to understand the sexual situations the characters are shown in or handle it with the maturity the material needs. Even with these boundaries schools and other communities should not ban books as no group of people should control what others read. Just because you and maybe a group of people around you do not agree with the content of one book does not mean it should be banned. In many cases such as Harry Potter it is Christians arguing against the book, but many of them would be in full support of the bible being in schools without other religious representation even if it is offensive to other groups. Book banning is almost always the wrong choice and people need to learn to place boundaries in their families about what should and shouldn’t be read, which would be a more community-friendly option, an option that can help many. All this being said there are certain books, such as The Turner Diaries, that promote extreme harm to others that I would agree with being banned. The only problem with banning books like that, no matter how much they deserve that is it sets a precedent that it is okay to ban books which is why I would argue instead for some restrictions on them. As in nearly all cases banning books is wrong and an encroachment on our First Amendment rights.
I think I mentioned this before, but I don't think any book should be banned. I mean, there is a time and place for a restriction, like a parent signature or something, but no books should be banned.
""Alright, readers. My words might sound a bit harsh, but you are trying to solve an issue that humans have disagreed on for thousands of years.Whether banned books are correct or not, or whether any other books are the same,
you can still take good morals from them from your perspective as a human being, and leave behind the parts that seem violent or unethical.
Your mind is your balance."
PEN America states that more than 16,000 books have been banned nation wide. America is afraid of something different, if it threatens the status quo, it is seen as taboo.
These books aren’t just pieces of literature, they’re pieces of ourselves. When we allow these monumental pieces of humanity to diminish, we’re silencing voices, and most importantly humanity.
"And I believed that for every adult who found the book to be offensive, there would be one child who found comfort in the words on those pages." - Jessica Herthel
(This is a little snippet of a program I'm working on for my Speech & Debate class about banned books!! :) )
I don't believe books should be banned but not in school libraries like Colleen Hoover or Haunting Adeline. I also think SOME books should be restricted from middle school like the Twisted Series or any of that kind of books until either maturity high in the student or until the 8th grade cause that's when I read that stuff. But if a kid owns it then what's the harm? I was on AO3 and Wattpad reading x reader fanfics at 10 so who am I to judge 😬
Nooo not Wattpad 😭 💔
generally, i do not support the idea of banning books. i agree that certain books should be age-restricted, and even though i was in middle school during the golden age of wattpad, and i was reading things i SHOULDN'T have been reading (😭😭), booksellers should be responsible for properly categorizing their books based on mature content, especially differentiating between teen and ya books. school libraries should also adjust their inventory based on the school grades. an elementary school library should have elementary-level books, so on and so forth. public libraries or bookstores like barnes & noble are free to shelf whatever they want.
my one exception to book banning, however, are those with extremely inappropriate content. for instance, an author from australia was just arrested after publishing what was essentially a pedophilic romance book. the article: https://people.com/author-facing-chil...
Banned? No. I definitely think certain things shouldn’t be required reading at school though. But if a student chooses to read it in their own time that is their right.
um absolutely not. i have SO much to say on this lmaobooks should not be banned. you cannot tell other people how to live their life or what they can and cannot experience, especially with something that can be so impactful such as books. can books be not appropriate for a certain age group? yes, but that doesn’t mean that everyone is not ready for a more difficult and challenging book! some books have very difficult topics and things that may make people uncomfortable. JUST DON’T READ THEM THEN! it’s literally not your right to take away something that may resonate with someone and help them feel confident and comfortable in their own body.
books should not be banned. you cannot tell other people how to live their life or what they can and cannot experience, especially with somethi..."
Yes!! 👏
books should not be banned. you cannot tell other people how to live their life or what they can and cannot experience, especially with somethi..."
exactly!! and about that last part, i totally agree with that! like for example, some people get triggered by the same content that i feel represented by, and vice versa. another person's fears or discomforts shouldn't dictate the censorship of a book for other, completely unrelated people.

I have looked at the evidence (for religions), and the evidence points to the Bible. Ande the Bible says sex outside of marriage is wrong!
