im taking ap calc at school, but i want to be able to pass the ib exam, so i need to pass calc2 too. ugh.

message 452: by Adam (new)

Adam | 83 comments what's the IB exam and what do you need to know Calc 2 for?

message 453: by [deleted user] (new)

there's like the AP exam at the end of the year, but our school allows us to take the IB, which means if you pass that, you basically pass Calc2. Which means you don't need to take that in college. I had to do alot of negotiations to skip out on it in my college classes, because one class in high school is hard enough and i would hate to repeat it.
i guess that means if i pass the IB exam, i can start at Calc3? Joy.

Kristina (goodreadscomkristina_l) | 10 comments Hi group! My name is Kristina, I'm 22, and from New York. I just graduated (2 weeks ago!) from Pace U with a B.A in English Literature. Now I'm taking a semester off before starting Grad school (well, that's the plan any way!) I'm applying to jobs, but we all know how the job market is now-a-days. Basically, I have a whole lot of free time to read. And I babysit a lot, so I get paid to read while kiddies sleep, a lot. I've been a member of Goodreads for a while, but haven't found too many groups to join. This one looked fun and friendly so I thought why not?! I spend too much of my time on this website, I might as well make some friends! Anyway, a little about me: I love reading, writing, photography, hiking, and traveling (France is my number one). My all-time favorite books would have to be The Harry Potter series, The Girl Who Played With Fire, The Hunger Games series, The Help, Never Let Me Go, and my guilty pleasure---anything Harlan Coben.

I can't wait to get to know everyone! Best wishes :)

Yeah, but didn't you say you were doing some kind of Psychiatry or pre-Med thing? Why would you even need Calc 3... nevermind needing Calc 2? (Calc 3 was my favorite by the way hehe)

because my mothers a math freak and wants me to take it. and because she's helping me pass math, i have to listen to her. sigh...what a life

Hey Kristina! I'm also a recent grad with a B.A. in English! What kind of job are you hoping to get? I'm looking to get into the publishing industry (as an editor), but to get to New York I'd have to get a work visa... Anyway, thought I should say hi and maybe add you as a friend (if that's okay) since we have the same degree, and you live where I'd love to be!

Also, I LOVED France - favorite part?

Hey Stacey! I'm looking for something along the same lines as you. I want to be a book or literary magazine/journal editor. Unfortunately, there aren't too many jobs in that! I've been applying but haven't had much luck. How about you? Where did you earn your B.A from? I saw on your page that you're from Alberta. I hear it's beautiful there!

France is the best. Of course Paris is my favorite and I went at the end of summer/start of autumn so the foliage was beautiful. I think the best place I went to was Versailles and maybe also the D'Ordsay museum---beautiful stuff there! What's your favorite part?

Adam | 83 comments Esme wrote: "because my mothers a math freak and wants me to take it. and because she's helping me pass math, i have to listen to her. sigh...what a life"

That's not a good reason to take higher level math if you don't need it. If you don't like it that much you really shouldn't, no matter how much of a math freak your mom is. Calc 3 isn't even really going to tell you anything all that new beyond Calc I and II. The main difference is that it's in 3 dimensions.

Is your mom a mathematician or something?

message 460: by [deleted user] (new)

no, but she could be. its not that i completely hate calc, and i do like to challenge myself. is it really that useless of a course? i know that i'll never use anything beyond geometry and a little trig in medicine, but is it worth learning just for the heck of it?

message 461: by Adam (new)

Adam | 83 comments Esme wrote: "no, but she could be. its not that i completely hate calc, and i do like to challenge myself. is it really that useless of a course? i know that i'll never use anything beyond geometry and a little..."

Only if you need to study Vector Calculus, which, as far as I know is primarily built for doing Physics. So unless you also need to take Physics (especially Electromagnetism) then it might not be very useful for you. Calculus is pretty good to know at the medical level because it can deal with rates of change and fluid flow. Such as blood flowing through your body can be used with basic rate of change equations. But unless you really need to study fluid mechanics in 3D... I don't know how much you'd use it.

Lucky! yeah, i get what you're saying because med school is about the body and stuff, not math. i wish things were like that here :)

Adam--
i do think physics is alot of fun, but im not really going into that beyond AP.
would i need to know anything more about calc if i have plans to be a psychiatrist?

I doubt it. Unless you want to do neuroscience, that could wind up being all math. And depending on what end you get into it could either be loads of statistics (which really isn't math to me) or a lot of physics dealing with electrical signals... since that's how the brain works. (And at that point you're more of a Physicist and need Vector Calculus (i.e Calc III)). But if you're more interested in behavioral research then you most likely would only need to deal with statistical modelling. The most you'd need to know for advanced stuff would be Calc II, I think. There's this thing called the Standard Normal Curve, which can be represented as an integral form. I don't do much stats and probability, but that's the heaviest Calc we talked about in my Applied Stats course at the University level.

The human body is really a bunch of physics and chemistry when you get right down to it. My Calc I professor did his PhD thesis on muscle contraction and developed a mathematical model to explain it, which is a pretty interesting application. I never would have thought of that.

message 466: by [deleted user] (new)

that's funny because my dad's a neurosurgeon and he isn't a math fan. yeah...i figured i need vector calc and lots of statistics, but i can stop there right? because im interested in medical and behavorial stuff.
im taking alot of sciences, so i think i understand the human body well enough. that's a really cool thesis, was it ever published?

message 467: by Adam (new)

Adam | 83 comments Esme wrote: "that's funny because my dad's a neurosurgeon and he isn't a math fan. yeah...i figured i need vector calc and lots of statistics, but i can stop there right? because im interested in medical and be..."

Well, there are differential equations, which you only need Calc II for, which really studies rates of change super in depth. That might actually be more useful than Calc III. I'm not sure, I'd really talk to the university you end up going to and ask them what kind of math you'd need for your specific industry/program.

See, I think there are all kinds of interesting things you can do with math, but I'm also aware that it just might not be practical for some people to know it.

I think he did have the thesis published. I'm not sure where though.

message 468: by [deleted user] (new)

yeah, i have an appointment set up for some time next month, but i really go overboard with scheduling and everything. and mcats are coming up, so ugh.
oh well, that's still cool. if you ever find out where he published it, let me know because that sounded really interesting.

EZ (constantlearner) | 9 comments Warm greetings from Canada. Joined your group because of your group name, 'College Students.' Since, taking a year off from my studies; finally applied to go back to College and got an official admission a few weeks ago =). September, 2011 is a bit far still at the moment. Therefore, hopefully this group can be a great companion to that journey of going back to my studies. So this group fit nicely for part of my life at the moment. Plus, living in a small community, it can be hard to find many people or College students for that matter with similar interests.

message 470: by [deleted user] (new)

so what are your interests, ezrah?

message 471: by EZ (new)

EZ (constantlearner) | 9 comments Some of my interests but not limited: basketball, driving, reading, studying, and learning new skills. HA! Learning to play the violin is a new skill for me to learn. It's one of my childhood dreams =).

message 472: by [deleted user] (new)

ooh, violin. i always wanted to learn that.

message 473: by Ravenn (new)

Ravenn (Ravenway) Hello all, my name is Ravenn. I'm a sophomore in college. I was a Japanese major but, I'm going to hopefully be switching to Creative Writing. I love learning new languages although I'm only studying two right now(Korean and Japanese). I want to speak five languages fairly fluently by the time I'm thirty. Such languages are: English(done...I hope), Japanese, Korean, Italian and then for the last one probably French or Romanian(the Romanian is random...)

Reading is one of my favorite hobbies, I love fan fiction, books of all kinds and random online articles about, well...random things.

My favorite foods include bread(muffins, cake, cupcakes, rolls etc.) and Pizza.
My favorite colors in no specific order are: Purple, Red and Black.

I play the Clarinet(kind of...losing time for it) and I eventually want to learn Viola.

Nice to meet you!

message 474: by [deleted user] (new)

five languages? wow, that's amazing.

message 475: by Ravenn (new)

Ravenn (Ravenway) It's only a goal but, I guess I'm almost halfway there since I'm working on two and have one down. I have about ten more years to work on it.

message 476: by [deleted user] (new)

well good luck! ive been struggling to learn italian for nine years, but i still can't write fluently in it. it's quite an accomplishment to become fluent in even one language, let alone five!

message 477: by EZ (new)

EZ (constantlearner) | 9 comments Amazing, Ravenn! You have goals that matches mine =). You seem very creative with your dreams in mind.

Precious Jem (preciousjem) | 8 comments .Hi guys! I'm Jeremae from The Philippines! 18 years young =). February 5 is the date. I love eating. Vegetables are the favorite ;>. Define sleeping and staying awake very late at night :)). I'm trying to learn Hangeul, but as of now it's not my priority. Oh yes, I'm a frustrated photographer and writer. LOL.

.Currently I am a sophomore student under the program BS Biochemistry. I was a bookworm when I was in elementary, but then I lay low when I turned high school until I rarely get to hold and read GOOD books :)). Two years ago, I happened to read a novel by a local writer, Bob Ong (he's a very good writer!), and my "first love" had me again :)). I haven't read a lot of books, though, and a little bit choosy on what books to read :D. So there it goes! Hope to have good friends here :). Actually, it's my first time to join a group like this, discussing stuffs. And yes, I'm a little bit excited because it's also going to be my first time to interact with people from around the globe :)). What a newbie! :)) Hooray for me! LOL. By the way, I seem to be the newest member here. Am I?? LOL. See you around guys! :))

Dina (mjoedix) Hey. I'm Dina, and I'm from Denmark. I'm 24 and am about halfways to a bachelor degree in radiography - very interesting subject :-).

For a while, I have been a part of this group without posting anything, but thank you for a wonderful group. It's fantastic to know, that you're not reading alone. The most people I know in real life, do not read or, they rarely read. Me, I like to read and learn new things, learn to see things from a different view.

message 485: by eva (new)

eva (mimit_22) hi. im eva. im 23, and i finished my first bachelors degree (engineering) almost a year ago but im still in school trying some other subjects before i go out in the real world....
i recently got an ereader and decided to become more active in goodreads and in this kind of groups...

message 486: by Holley (new)

Holley (hizzle85) | 5 comments hello everyone! i'm holley, and i'm not really new but i havent posted much before.
i'm 25, and i love to read (obviously, right?). my most recent victory is getting my husband to become more of a reader since we purchased nook colors. he had read more in the past 5 months than in the past 5 years. i'm quite proud.
i live near knoxville tennessee, and I work at the university here. i've got a puppy, but no kids.
i have my BS in communication, minored in leadership studies. i should have majored in english :)
i started an IRL book club, we meet monthly, and i love that.
it's nice to meet you all!! :)

Josh | 2 comments I'm Josh. I'm a writing student at UVic. I'm nearing the end of the first draft of my first real attempt at a novel and, in a possibly disastrous case of multitasking, also working on a collection of shorts. I've lived here for three years, grew up in Alberta, Canada. I'm a bit fan of fragments, short, punchy sentences, and the comma. In an attempt to push away from the single-minded focus of some writers, I've also been involving myself more and more in the hardcore scene, both as a watcher and as a musician. DIY ethics are something I feel strongly about, and I'm an aspiring vegan. I don't really know what else to say. Hi.
