Mini Challenge #5- Guess the book but different (difficult edition)

Alright, so this one needs a bit of explaining. These descriptions DON'T match the plots of the books at all but they describe the title of the book. Guess which book it is!

For example: the period just before it becomes completely dark in the evening - twilight; Do as the romans do - when in rome; A chess term and a symbol- check & mate ; A greeting to someone you don't know- Hello Stranger (get the idea?)
