Ever read a series that you thought was SO good that you had trouble picking up other books? That you had trouble reading other books since they seemed to pale in comparison?

Discuss why you think that is, and how you overcame the obstacle in your reading.

I chose this question for discussion because that is where I am at right now. And I figure it would be a good thing to discuss.

So my answer is YES! And I can't really answer the second part because I have yet to overcome my obstacle :(

new_user Which series, Tricia? :)

Rachel Morgan series.

I find it so damn good that I am stuck in a rut and its making me depressed :(

message 5: by new_user (new)

new_user Really? Maybe I should give it a try.

There's really nothing to do for it, but to keep reading and realize that there are no two series that are alike, really. LOL. Probably but not what you were looking for, but if you keep looking for the same, you'll keep getting disappointed. You have to take each on their own merits.

Yeah, I remember feeling the same way about the Anita Blake series.. and wow did I find SO many more that are just as good and A WHOLE LOT BETTER :D

I just thought this would be a good topic to discuss :D

Oh and if you haven't read them, OMG you should! I promise they will not disappoint!

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I felt that way initially with Harry Potter. Buying new books at midnight and starting to read them immediately. Once I found the Aunt Dimity mystery novels by Nancy Atherton I fell in love with all of them too. Most recently last month I discovered the Study series by Maria Sndyer. The follow-up series to that is the Glass series. Two of the three books are out. They finally arrived this week but I havn't started them yet because I was up til between 2 to 5am each night finishing the Study books and I figure the Glass books would be the same. Waiting til I have an entire day and night to read it! lol (The Glass series takes a minor character from Study series, same world, and makes her the main character.)

Joelle | 47 comments Psy/changeling...I am ruined for all other books every other world just fades in comparison from Jr Ward come right down I am just hooked on Nalini Singh's world.

For urban fantasy I am hooked on Chloe Neill and her Chicagoland Vampires also totally ruined me. I am taking it one day at a time and forcing myself to read other books though by participating in challenges; because even though I am not reading as much I am still buying alot!

I also read m/m and f/f and Jet Mykles, Bobby Micheals, G A Hauser, Radclyffe and Meghan O'brien have me hooked..no competition from outside yet.

I keep hearing a lot about the Chicagoland Vampires! I am going to need to pick those up :)

Book Huntress (bookhuntress) | 84 comments It is SO hard when you are in the midst of a series to even think about other books... I have to confess I have actually been so immersed that when I get to the end I have gone back and restarted it. There is just nothing better than finding a universe that is so compelling and "real" that you just lose yourself in it.

Some of my favs:

Black Jewels
Anita Blake
Black Dagger Brotherhood
Merry Gentry
LA Banks Vampire Huntress

It is a really good feeling isn't it? Until you get to the last book! Then panic and despair set in! lol

Jennifer--I loved The Black Jewels Trilogy . Awesome world building and wonderful character development--I had that series in my head for a long time.

Other series for me that it took me awhile to get into another book because I couldn't stop thinking about them were--

Outlander, Diana Gabaldon
Magic Bites, Kate Daniels Series, Ilona Andrews
A Game of Thrones, Song of Ice & Fire Series, George R.R. Martin
The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins

It really is that mixture of panic and despair isn't it??!! I mean you are excited to get another book, but when you realize it is the last one either available, or god forbid the last one ever, this slight panic takes over. we really are all sick aren't we??

SO glad to find someone else who loves this series, it is one of my absolute FAVs - I just can't stop reading it.... Have to say it is one of my "go to" series, especially when life is in a slump...

Yes we are! lol

I actually have not read the last one of hers yet... for that very reason. Well that and its in hardcover and since the rest are in paperback format I didnt wanna mess up my bookshelf with 1 odd size book lol.

At least, that's what I keep telling myself.. but I know the main reason is because its the last (thus far) in the series and I am already having a panic attack about it lol. I have put 3 books down that I was intending to read this month due to not being interested in them after reading a chapter.

Though, perhaps some good will come of this discussion.. as people post what series they were truly fond of - we get a good idea of what to test out. I think I will find some awesome things to read from this thread hehe.

Book Huntress (bookhuntress) | 84 comments That is the true danger of this type of thread - more books!!!!!

and I totally get where you are coming from on the paperback vs hardcover... I have some authors I only buy in 1 form or the other based on what I already own, and I have to say due to the amount of reading I do with Anne Bishop & Black Jewels I have to have them in paperback, so I took a while to read her last one. Although i have been known to borrow them in hardcover from the library while waiting for the paperback to come out... :)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) That's what's nice about being a library person vs. a buyer--the format doesn't matter for me, I put them on hold on my library's website before they even come out, and get an email when they're waiting for me. But I'm not a re-reader usually, and on the rare occasion I am, I can just request them all again from the library.

I just read way too much to buy--it would severely limit how much I read. And when I do buy I always lend them out and chances are I never see them again. I'm not real good are remembering who I lent what to. :)

Paula (pauldajo) I seemed to discover authors with well established series, so I am able to buy 4 or 5 books at once and happily read them. The downer is finishing those books and having to wait a year for the next.

However since my TBR pile has gotten so big and I've joined GR the pressure to read has taken a lot of the joy away. Instead of enjoying a book, I find myself just trying to get through it. I'm not liking that. I'm going to take a deep breathe and slow down. I joined GR to discuss books, but if I don't retain the content of the books, then I can't discuss it. No more new series until I get a handle on my TBR stack. I want to get that desperate need for the next book in my favorite series back. Right now I see a new series book and mumble 'not another one'!.

I was having the same problem with remembering who I've lent what to. I started a shelf with "lent" and I write the persons name on the description area that way I'm the only one that sees that. It's helped me keep track. It may help you too. :)

The series I can't let go is Black Dagger Brotherhood, and I'm ok with that. Unless I've just finished re-reading one of them I can switch to another series. I kind of look at it as getting a puppy. If you've had a dog before and they've passed and you get a puppy, at first you keep comparing them till you realize they are seperate personalities. Strange yes, but it works for me.

It is tough to find a series in progress, get to the end and then have to wait, but better to wait then have it end...

As for the overwhelming pile of TBR, I was becoming bogged down and felt like I had to "catch up", still kind of feel that way but have decided to try looking at it as a wonderful gift to look forward to... not sure if it will work, but did help me slow down a bit and lessen the anxiety...

I get what you are saying Paula, and a couple times I have tried to rush a book so I could get to others.

But now I don't do that. No matter how many books I add to my TBR (and I still add more each day it seems) I always make sure I read my books with a good pace that will allow me to thoroughly enjoy it rather then rush through it.

Even if that means my TBR will take longer to get through. But the way I see it I am constantly adding new things and constantly discovering new authors that I dont ever *want* my TBR to end lol.
So that really doesn't bother me that much :)
