What Are You Reading? - 2025
Kristie wrote: "Saar, I have not read Migrations. Once There Were Wolves was my first book by that author and I didn't love it. I seem to be in the minority on that one. I will keep..."Let me know when you do :) It's not the easiest book to read. It grows on you.
Katrisa wrote: "I have Migrations on my to read list for this month!"I'm curious on what you'll find of it, Katrisa.
I'm reading multiple books, but one stands out: When Women Were Dragons. Some parts make me just so furious to read.
I changed my mind at the 10% mark in The Quarry Girls. It's about a serial killer stalking teenaged girls and it was making me anxious.Instead, I'll start The Quiet Game. It's the only other "Q" book I have.
Sandra, I read The Green Mile when it was first published as a serial. I'm sure it was just a marketing ploy and increased revenue by selling each volume individually, but it was a lot of fun. I remember getting so excited for the next chapter to be released.
The book has a long preface by Stephen King telling how he came up with the idea for the story, and the decision and experience of publishing it as a serial. I thought it was very interesting. So cool that you got to read it how it was intended to be!
I finished Isola which was a bleak portrayal of a woman's exile on a remote island back in the 1500's.I hope the book I start today, The Wedding People will be more upbeat.
I finished Legends & Lattes and Nobody’s Fool today. Both really good books. my Legends & Lattes review
my Nobody's Fool review
I'm going to start Parents Weekend and maybe The Anxious Generation. I have The Anxious Generation from the library, but it goes back in three days. I'm not sure if I'll be able to get through it that quickly. I'm wondering if I should skip it for now and just move on to something else. I had to wait so long to get it though. lol

I finished today and I absolutely LOVED it! Unlike a lot of "cli fi" this near future world felt really real and not all Mad Max. The way humans were dealing with the mass extinctions of animals on Earth was totally believable. I sometimes don't get on board with books that go back and forth in time - but this one was done so well and even though I listened to the audio (which I think is why I often don't like going back and forth in time) I never had any issues with where I was in the story. The human connections were done so well. The book was at once poetic and gritty - sad and beautiful. The ending will stay with me. I haven't had a five star read in a while and this was absolutely 5 stars for me.
I started The Anxious Generation, but found I was only sort of half listening at times. Nothing wrong with the book, just a lot of distractions around here right now. I got to 10% and decided that I wasn't going to get as much out of the book as I would like to if I tried to rush through it in three days, so I sent it back to library and will have to wait for it again. I'm not in a big hurry for it anyway. I decided to start Mastering the Art of French Murder for the monthly challenge.
I'm currently reading The Ragged Edge of Night which is a "based on a true story" account of a priest during WW2 who was forced to fight in the war was injured and how he became involved in the resistance. It is a slow burn, but so well-written. There is a lot of reflection on God and humanity. It might be one of my favorite WW2 books.
Saar & Kristie, I was browsing new releases on Audible last night and found Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghy. I read Once There Were Wolves but not Migrations. Wild Dark Shore sounds interesting but will have to think about it. I have something like 7 credits left and it seems like I have lots of books calling out to me.
So is 3 times the charm? I just can't do The Quiet Game. It's steeped in racial unrest. There's enough unrest going on in the world right now that I don't want to spend my reading time on it. I'm looking more and more for escape.I need that Q book though, so tonight I'll start The Queen of the Tearling.
I finished listening to Behind You Is the Sea It’s an interconnected short stories collection, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I’m still with the ebook A Calamity of Noble Houses and I’m going to start the audiobook Walking the Nile.
I might use one of my Everand unlocks for Wild Dark Shore because I loved Migrations so much. I finally read Soulless, which had been on my TBR forever. I've had it slotted for tasks before and then changed my mind. I used it this year for the umbrella task. I'm glad I finally read it because it is fun and I will definitely continue the series. I love finally getting those books off the TBR that just keep lingering for whatever reason.
I've set aside The Queen of the Tearling for the time being while I read the group themed read, The River We Remember.
I'm reading Farilane in a buddy read with Margo, and The River We Remember for the group themed read.
I finshed The River We Remember for the group themed read.I will go back to finish The Queen of the Tearling. I don't have much to go, but I had set it aside so I could start the group themed read.
I also finished The River We Remember for the group themed read. It was a slow build, but I thought it was very well-written. Really good story. I am now starting Famous Last Words
by Gillian McAllister. This will be my first book by this author.
I also finished Parents Weekend by Alex Finlay. I really enjoyed this one. I had some of the story figured out, but not the whole thing. There were a bunch of little reveals along the way. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I started reading Jennie by Paul Gallico. It's a classic written in 1950 that has a whimsical innocence to it that I am really enjoying.
I had less to finish than I realized with The Queen of the Tearling. I love when you think you have a ways to go and find that much of it is am excerpt of the next book in the series, and pages of praise for the book. It wasn't that praiseworthy in my mind.I will start The Village Healer’s Book of Cures today.
I finished The Green Mile, and started Let the Right One In.I had downloaded The Outsider audiobook, when I got a notification that Sidi, another audiobook I was in the waiting list for, is available, so I downloaded too. Now I have to decide which one I start first.
I've started two new books - The Warbler on audiobook, and Through These Dark Gates on ebook. The second is for my real life book club.
I just finished The Love Haters, but haven't written my review yet. I am almost done with Good Dirt and am still early on in The Man Made of Smoke. Next up, I need to get to my monthly challenge book, Mr. Whisper.
