Saar The Book owl | 2648 comments One of the horses at the stable where my horse lives, died in a terrible accident last Friday. I'm still shaken up a bit. I got there at noon and saw that 3 horses (a mare, a stallion and a foal) was missing. I didn't thought something at first, went to an old horse that I feed and then walked to my horse. As I did that, the horse at the back pastures were neighing in high tones, so that's a sign there's something wrong. I walked to the pasture and saw that the stallion had broken loose and had chased the mare into the broad ditch. There was electric wire, so I couldn't go close and stallions can be dangerous, so I throw mud at him to chase him away and yelled. He wouldn't move and tried to mount the mare and bit her. I was all alone and called the stable owner that someone needed to come and that he called the vet, because things looked bad. The mare was stuck in the mud. It was nearly knee deep, with very muddy. Then she tried to stand up, I've chased the stallion away and the mare fell onto her side. When waiting that someone showed up, I held her head high, so she wouldn't drown. I fell a couple of times into the mud and water, but I didn't care. I functioned on adrenaline...Finally her owner came with a halter, so I could put up more force in holding her up with someone else. I checked her gums, felt her legs for open fractures. Then the fire men and the police and the vet came. It felt all so long...The fire men pulled the mare out. She had some injuries, nothing bad at first sight. She made attempts to stand up and finally did, but then the vet checked her legs. Her hipbone in her back left leg was broken and there's nothing that could've been done about it. The mare was put to sleep. We lived on hope, all these hours...I came home and cried my eyes out, even if it wasn't my horse. Still now, I've got a lump in my throat. This morning, the stable owner and his girlfriend (who was the owner of the mare) came to my house with flowers to thank me for my help. I felt so small...My feet hurt more since that day, I've got muscle ache all over my body, but I'll do it again in a heartbeat. I just hoped that it would end differently.

Have you got a date set for surgery, Margo? Do you know why it happened faster? My grandmother had the surgery too and it's really simple. She left the hospital the same day and saw much better very fast. Her other eye had cataract too and it was the same. Laser surgery has made a very good development since it was used and it's simple too. I keep my fingers (and toes) crossed that you get an appointement soon.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments That is so sad, Saar. I also wish it would have ended differently, but you have to think you did all you could, with your feet in pain and everything. You were amazing and there is nothing else you could have done that would have changed the outcome. Big hug.

Kristie | 19137 comments Oh, Saar. I'm so sorry. What a horrible thing to witness and be a part of. It sounds like you did everything you could, but I'm sure it's still heartbreaking. Take good care of yourself and try to do something relaxing or give yourself a treat. You certainly deserve it. .

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments Oh my! How traumatic that must have been Saar. Poor horse. I feel bad for her.

message 207: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2648 comments It's just something you watch on tv in shows about vets and find it sad, but in real life...It's just something that will stay with me and something I'll give a place in my heart. With my internship as a vet tech there were also some difficult moments that got a place there. That experience made me doubt on my studies. I wanted to quite. But, like those other moments, I just think of it as a sign that I'm doing the right thing, that this is the path I need to follow, as silly as it seems writing this down.

message 208: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments I don't think that's silly Saar. I think it's admirable that you love animals and are working to their betterment.

Kristie | 19137 comments I've gotten myself into a situation again where a bunch of library books have all come in at the same time. I can't place additional holds due to library limits, so I accepted them all. I can't imagine I'll have time to read all 7 books in the 3 weeks I'm allotted (even though I really want to read them all), so I'll have to prioritize as many as I can.

Sarah | 18549 comments I've been AWOL again. I've been ill with a stomach acid problem. Been on a resrictive diet which is boring and depressing. It keeps flaring up and disrupting my sleep. Had an endoscopy which was normal thankfully. But it persists. And i have a few other health things going on. So it got me down. Which means i tend to retreat a bit. I've also been flat out with uni. I'm doing well and just 6 weeks more full time and then back to part time until February. My tutor suggested i apply for the clinical psychology doctorate which is funded by the NHS once I'm done, well, after a masters as well, that is. So i have a plan! So my reading is non existent, other than research papers and textbooks, unfortunately. So much for doing the annual challenge this year!

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments Good luck Kristie. How long do you get them before the loan terminates? We get 3 weeks,

I feel for you Sarah. I hope they get to the bottom of your stomach problems and you start feeling better.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I hope you find a treatment that helps soon, Sarah.

I remember going through that, Sarah. Schooling just takes over at that level. Hopefully, you'll have a little down time here and there to read for enjoyment only.

I'm not generally one to give out advice when it's not asked for, but I recently went through an acid stomach issue that was keeping me up at night as well. That was always when it was the worst. The doctor was no help, but I did a little online research and what helped me was drinking extra water. It seemed so simple and I was happily surprised that it worked. It diluted the acids in my stomach and the issue went away. It is now only a problem when I slack on my water consumption. (I don't know why I have such a difficult time drinking water, but I do.) So, just a suggestion, maybe you could try to increase how much water you drink if you also struggle with that.

We also get 3 weeks. A couple of them I have already had for two weeks, so I'll have to focus on those first. I just dowloaded four of them within the past 24 hours though.

Oh Saar, what a sad story. That poor mare. But, she was luck that it was you who came along. You say it didn't change the outcome but it did. Instead of her drowning along in a puddle, she was surrounded by kind people trying to help her. I'm sure her pain was controlled and that she died peacefully. Sometimes that's all we can do for our animals, but it's not nothing.

It was a terrible experience for you, especially in your current state of health. I'm glad that the owners recognised your help and thanked you. It must have a huge shock for them too. It this unusual behaviour from the stallion? What will happen to him?

Same here. For some reason I rarely feel thirsty so I forget to drink water. It is very weird. Even after hiking, being outside in summer, or breastfeeding I have to force myself to drink water. I'm pretty sure is an issue with the hardware. There is a sensor that I don't have or it never worked. LOL.

I have an appointment to meet the surgeon next tuesday. I've spoken with people who've had it done and I know it's simple and effective.

I told the optician that I'd been on a lot of oral steroids in the past 6 months. She says that might have been the cause. It was worrying as I went from mild visual problems to not being able to see well enough to drive, that happened almost overnight. I was so happy when I was told "it's a cataract" :-)

Same. I've read books where someone will go 24 hours without water and be soooo thirsty and I always think I could do that on accident. Do most people get super thirsty that quickly? I honestly just forget most of the time. I notice when I start getting a migraine or other issue and realize I'm probably dehydrated. I do carry a water bottle with me everywhere now though and it helps to serve as a reminder at least.

My mom had the cataract surgery a few years ago and her sight was instantly better. She wore glasses most of her life and doesn't need them now. I know many people who have the surgery and are very happy with the results. It's a very common surgery and I'm sure you'll recover quickly.

message 220: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2648 comments @Kristie: I know the feeling. We can loan books for 4 weeks here and then extend it with another 4 weeks. Can you preoritize some or read the shorter ones? Or just the ones you really, really want to read. You can also pick some while covering your eyes!

@Sarah: could this be a stress related problem? I know that stress can affect the stomach and some homeopathic drops can help. You have a lot on your plate with uni, but you can be proud of yourself for doing that. Like Kristie says, water can help. My husband had that to at night and he drank water with a natural content of natural salt in it. Milk also helps. He drinks that now. Just little sips.

@Margo: I hope that your appointement will go well and that you'll be reassured for the surgery. You'll recover very quickly. Thank you for your kind words. It's not unusual behaviour for a stallion. Once they bred a mare, well they know how 'things work'. Some are more in hand and can be better controlled, some not. It couldn't be predicted. There are really behaved stallions too, that you can ride on it while being in a herd of mares. They will do nothing.

message 221: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Thanks for the advice Kristie. I'm glad your stomach has improved. I have been wondering about water actually. I am rubbish at drinking it too. When i first started my adhd meds i was so unbelievably thirsty all the time that i drank so much water. As i got used to them, that side effect lessened and so i started drinking less. It does fit with the timings, so i have been making a conscious effort to drink a bit more but i have a way to go, I think. And Saar, it absolutely could be stress related what with uni and getting used to lifing with someone again and it having been winter which I'm not a fan of.

Jayme | 4519 comments Boy I do not like the new lay out for GoodReads 2025 Challenge. The number of books that I read is way off. It counts books that you read on your kindle and if it is also on your TBR list twice and if you delete one it will delete both.
Has anyone else noticed this and have you figured out a work around? I read pretty fast, but not 46 books read by April fast. 🤣

message 230: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments I just went to check mine, but I'm not having the same problem. I never linked my Kindle to my GR account though, so maybe that's the difference? That's incredibly frustrating though. I hope someone has a workaround or they fix that glitch soon.

message 231: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments I checked my challenge and it's correct. I don't have Amazon linked to my Goodreads account either. I was always leery of something like this happening and chose to add/delete books manually in Goodreads.

message 232: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments That sounds annoying, Jayme. I agree that sounds like something that might solve itself if you delete the link with your Amazon account.

message 233: by Jayme, Moderator (new)

Jayme | 4519 comments I will try deleting my Amazon account. I didn't know that you could link them.

message 234: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments I think there was an option to link them but I don't remember how or when. Presumably there is a way to unlink them without deleting your Amazon account.

message 235: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments Okay, gpchat says

On the goodreads mobile account tap:
More menu
settings>account
tap "Disconnect Amazon Account"

On goodreads website click
Update or remove account linking
Select: Unlink Amazon Account

message 236: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments I just checked, and it's under "edit profile", account settings, apps.

message 237: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4528 comments On my kindle, in settings, in “your account” , there’s a tab for “Goodreads” where you can connect your Goodreads account to your kindle. If you connect, then you share your reading progress and quotes. When you finish reading a book, it will automatically show up on Goodreads. I’ve always had my Goodreads account unconnected.

message 238: by Jayme, Moderator (last edited Apr 28, 2025 03:20AM) (new)

Jayme | 4519 comments Thanks everyone for the help.
I did unlink my amazon account via the website and then went back and deleted the books that were counted twice. But I will also check my kindle to see if Goodreads is still linked.
I recently got a new phone and I don't know if it automatically linked when everything updated or if I clicked on something and okd the link.
Anyway problem solved. Now I'm back to reading my normal speed 😉

This is the first time I've heard of this causing the problems! I have never linked my accounts so haven't been having any trouble. Also, I only use my kindle off-line, troglodyte that I am. I haven't even been using it since it's old and the last two books I put on it had missing segments which was very annoying.

I am Mrs. Sensitive-to-the-modern-world-and-more and find that none of the kindles with lights agree with me, so when this one dies that's it for me.

Sarah | 18549 comments @Kristie - you are an absolute star! I have been drinking so much water since you mentioned it and my stomach pain started to ease and now it has basically gone at night so i can actually get some sleep. I've reintroduced all the foods i was avoiding and they don't cause me a problem. Except spicy food. I also started taking mt stomach medicine later in the day so now my adhd meds are working again, which makes me thirsty again so I'm needing to drink more anyway. I grabbed some electrolite tablets to take in case I'm flushing out the good stuff with the amount of water I'm drinking. I feel so much better, i can't believe it. I can now see how fed up I'd gotten about it all now that mood has lifted. So thank you Kristie!

I am in the final couple of weeks now of full time uni then drop back down to part time until Feb. Phew. So it is a bit manic at the moment. Looking forward to a little less pressure, might actually get a fiction book read then.
