Do you panic if you get 25-35 cm of snow? I guess storm season has arrived here.

Jenn | 3029 comments I am considering caving and getting an Audible membership, are there downsides (besides the cost) that I haven’t considered?

message 109: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments I love my Audible membership, Jenn. They have a catalog of free books that's included with membership and I am able to share my titles with my husband. I believe the free books are only available to the person with the membership though. Also, they have daily deals for inexpensive books and a lot of sales. They are really good about returns if you ever need to do that, but you can not return books that you didn't buy with a credit. So, if you get a book in a sale for $5, purchase a daily deals, or something like that, you can not return those. I think the only real issue might be that credits now expire one year from the date of purchase, so you do need to use them by a certain date. However, I don't think many people keep them that long anyway. Side notes - I love that you can adjust the speed. I dislike that it doesn't give you a percentage complete any more.

message 110: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I prefer the .com membership to the .ca membership. I haven't compared them in a while, but the Canadian membership offers a credit a month. Whereas, the US membership has more options. I buy 24 credits annually, and I can use them at any time of the year. I like the flexibility of that. You can also buy 12 credits a year.

The downside is that their prices are in US dollars.

I don't know if the Canadian site has the Audible Plus catalogue that Kristie mentions. Like I said, I haven't checked out the Canadian site in years so things may have changed.

message 111: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Just checked it out - you get one credit a month on the Canadian site. It does have access to the Audible Plus catalogue. If you have an Amazon prime membership, you will get 2 free audiobooks with a new membership.

If you don't mind the rationing of credits, it might work for you.

message 112: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments I always forget that there are differences in membership between different countries. Thanks for looking into that, Janice.

message 113: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments When I bought my membership, the US site was the only one available. When Canada launched its site, I considered switching, but I didn't think it offered me the same experience.

Funny, with Amazon, I cannot buy on the US site. I am instantly rerouted to the Canadian site.

message 115: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Only thing I will add for consideration as a non-Audible user - I dislike you are locked to the app to listen to your books. As someone with older devices which apps are beginning to not be supported on (looking at you Goodreads), I potentially would end up with books I purchased that I couldn't access on my phone or tablet.

We use Downpour which just gives you an audio file that you can use on any audio book or media player.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Catching up here.

No offense taken at all, I'm glad I made you all giggle, which was the aim ;)

Hope things are beginning to move a bit quicker for your Kristie.

Sorry to hear you've been so sick, Saar, and that you've been under the weather too, Sarah. Hope uni's settling a bit for you too.

Hope you're all staying warm in those temps!!

We have had a weird week of summer thunderstorms, including a massive hail storm at my place - poor plants! But better than the car, like my SIL who works at the school down the hill and her car is all dinted. And Friday we got a massive rain system that broke just as I left my office to walk to the car...

message 117: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments .... and likely stopped as soon as you got into the car? That would be typical of rain.

message 118: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments Rus - you can download the books to your laptop directly from the site too, so you don't have to use the app. You won't lose the books. But, I completely understand where you're coming from. I never listen from my laptop, so I need the app working properly.

The Goodreads app on the other hand just never works well. It really just needs some improvements because it isn't a great app. I used to use it all the time, but now I try not to even though it's inconvenient to wait for the laptop. My biggest complaint is probably that comments don't show up properly and you miss half of what's written. I do love being able to look up books while out and about though. I do that frequently.

message 119: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments Thanks, Rus. Everything is basically the same with the house - all torn up, no furniture, waiting on estimates, insurance, and decisions.

The car, however, we finally got back! The other shop has the part we need, so it should just take a short time to fix that. We don't even have to drop it off, we can just wait while they fix it. So happy to have it back!

In the midst of all this, we've been watching our neighbor's dog this past week. She's a Samoyed, a beautiful and sweet dog. Our cat isn't a fan of her though. lol She just went home this morning and our house feels a little more settled now. Pic of the sweetie below.

Thanks for that info. I must admit my knowledge is very out of date. But the one book I downloaded from Audible that I have on my server I need the Audible app on my computer to play still. Very odd.

My annoyances with the platform aside, there is unfortunately no other substitute for the library it has, and I do get FOMO with how many podcasts I want to listen to are only on Audible.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Yay on the car, and yay on the Samoyed! She's beautiful. My colleague had two samoyeds who used to come into the office every now and then. They were so beautiful, that I even forgave the male puppy (literally a puppy) who peed in my office.

message 125: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments Ok, wait. I don't actually know if you can download to your computer without some sort of app. I misspoke with that terminology. You can go directly to the website and hit play though. You can also do this through the website on your phone. I have had a couple of books that I purchased become not available for download and I was miffed because once you buy them they are supposed to be yours forever. Apparently, I still own those titles, I just need to listen through the website. Which is annoying.

Th neighbors who own the Samoyed have another one as well, but she is young and hyper. She went to a dog sitter's house. This one is older and I guess doesn't do so well with the amount of activity in that environment, so she came to our house where it is quieter for her.

message 126: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I don't have any problems with the Audible app. I have the app on my iPad and iPhone. My iPad is getting older and it will not longer update the Audible App. Maybe I'm not having issues because I have an older version of the app? I find when these developers try to fix something that is working, they make it not work.

I listen primarily on my iPad and would sync to my phone so I could listen to my book via bluetooth in the car. Now that I have a new car with Car Play, I'm not listening to my books in the car. Weird, I know.

Saar The Book owl | 2648 comments I bought a new smartphone thanks to my Iphone being 'really old' and not supporting updates anymore. It cut me off from Whats App and most of my messaging goes via that app.
I immediately installed a new image on my screensaver and it has the word 'tsundoku' in the image. If you're curious what that Japanese word means and stand for, Google is your friend. Many of you will recognize themselves in it ;)

Jayme | 4519 comments I'm heading into my garden today. It has been unusually cold here this year that I'm a bit afraid of what I might find.

message 149: by Kristie, Moderator (last edited Mar 22, 2025 07:19AM) (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments I went out to take a look at my flower garden yesterday, Jayme, and some things were already sprouting. I need to clean out last year's old stuff. Then, we are setting up a little greenhouse to protect my raise beds so I can get my veggie garden started. I haven't had a veggie garden in a few years. I'm hoping it goes well. I don't really have a green thumb.
