Daniel | 59 comments The page numbers for the Modern Library edition of Faust by Goethe is incorrect. The edition in question can be found here: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9...

The total number of pages is 440. Faust part one is 182 pages and Faust part two is 258 pages. This edition restarts page numbering for each part thus the two parts added together for this book is 440.

Proof of this can be found here: https://archive.org/details/faust1912...

Daniel | 59 comments I typed this on my phone and didn't realize that I misspelled Faust in the title. Not sure how to edit that.

Martin | 35958 comments I cannot find publication date at your source?
Part I looks to be 179 pages?

Daniel | 59 comments Yes, part 1 is 179 pages and part 2 is 258 pages for the edition I could find online as proof. The total numbers of pages would be those two added up. The copy in my hand is slightly different then one I could find online because there were multiple print runs with slight variations to how they formatted the introductions so it kinda throws off the exact page numbering. But for the purposes of this edition overall, I think its fair to say that this book is not 258 pages in length.

Martin | 35958 comments Are you saying page count should be 437?

Daniel | 59 comments Yes.

Martin | 35958 comments How can we know that is the same edition? I cannot see cover or date at your source.

Daniel | 59 comments Did you use the arrow keys to go to the front of the book? Modern Library's didn't print edition or print dates across their editions for a title all the time. Sometimes you'll get the first edition date but not the subsequent date of reprinting for later editions. For example this edition of Moliere's plays doesn't have any dates of publishing: https://archive.org/details/playsbymo.... Even though there were five different editions of that book over time from 1924-1957 by that publisher. The best way to figure out the edition date range for the Moliere book would be by knowing the author of the introduction which would date the edition. Another way collectors of Modern Library date a book is by looking at the available books listed at the end in its catalog. The other way is by looking at the the dust jacket which may or may not change with a new edition.

I was able to find the exact copy of the Modern Library Faust I own. Which can be found at this location: It too does not have a date of print. https://archive.org/details/faust0000.... I can confirm that the dust jacket I have on my shelf matches the dust jacket that is on the goodreads link above. Thus the print date is somewhere between 1941-1966.

Martin | 35958 comments A date range is not sufficient for us to add data to a specific edition.

Daniel | 59 comments This site continues to blow my mind how inept it is.

I have asked for page edits for modern library editions numerous times and not one person has mentioned this policy. Quote me the policy cause its not in here:

Martin | 35958 comments 'Books already in the database often already have page numbers, and these are occasionally incorrect. These can be corrected, but only if you have the exact book with a matching ISBN' obviously in this case there will be no ISBN, but it does need to be the 'exact book' so we would need to confirm details match, this would include year of publication.
