Jax (jaxn) | 55 comments Books read since Feb 15:

The Borrowed Life of Frederick Fife by Anna Johnston

The Madness of Crowds (Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, #17) by Louise Penny

And Then? And Then? What Else? by Daniel Handler

The madness of crowds can be used as a crowd to do the get away. Same for borrowed perhaps? (We borrow something to execute this?)

Shan ~A~ | 1257 comments I completely forgot about this since I haven't gotten notifications in a while. How are we doing?

message 107: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 1921 comments I've been meaning to sit down and go through everything, but I've been busy with work and have not had the time, We have all the books, I believe, the only thing we need to do is pick through the books to see what will fill in the gaps, and write it up. In msg 97 is where I started to place my books.

message 108: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 1438 comments I can help with this tomorrow afternoon so that we can figure out how to move to the next step.

message 109: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 1921 comments I have Tuesday off. Hopefully I will be able to have a few hours free to play around with this.

Michelle | 1921 comments Since this is not turning out the way everyone expected, should we throw in the towel?

I'm asking because I don't want to try and come up with a story if no one is enjoying the challenge.

It's definitely more challenging than I was expecting. I was doing the challenge solo as well, but realized I wasn't creative enough to come up with the story elements, so I gave in.

I'm on board with whatever the majority decides. I hate to give up, but I'm on board to let this one go.

message 114: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 1438 comments I also don’t usually give up but the creative aspect of this one might be too much for me. I can fill in spreadsheets and read books all day long but I’m just not good at telling stories. I’ve started sitting out on a few challenges that also require me to do both a spreadsheet post and a thread post this year just because of time constraints. I’m happy with doing whatever the group wants to do on this one.

message 115: by Jax (new)

Jax (jaxn) | 55 comments I'm also struggling with the story telling part. Mostly just how much of the books we have to use and how much we can fill in. Free form assignments are not my strong suit. Happy to go with whatever the team decides.

message 116: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 1921 comments I'm gonna have to throw the towel in on this challenge. I'm not really enjoying it like I thought I would and I kinda suck at the storytelling part.

message 117: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 1921 comments I can also let Donna or whomever is in charge know that we have decided to not continue.

message 118: by Shan ~A~ (new)

Shan ~A~ | 1257 comments Thanks, Michelle! The idea was promising, but definitely more than I think we were all expecting.

Why didn't you ask? I would have given you examples. I know that I have been pretty busy with my personal life in shambles but you guys can always reach out to me. I feel bad that you didn't feel that you could ask me. I have always been lenient with these type of tasks because I know it isn't everyone's cup of tea. Not to mention that I have been making the additional tasks less story tasks and more traditional tasks because I know you guys prefer them.

Donna (dkflynn33) | 7445 comments Mod
I am sorry that you guys decided to quit. I do understand. Story challenges are not for everyone. I was trying to make this challenge more varied, so the first step of each quest is a story task, but as you get further along in the quest, the tasks are more spell-it-outs and assigned tasks. Your next task in this quest would most likely have been assigned tasks, depending on you, of course. Some people moved on to the next quest quicker than others. The 2nd quest is actually more fun. Some interesting stuff is happening in some of the threads with the 2nd quest.

If you change your mind, I am always around. If not, no hard feelings. It's a challenge, and it isn't for everyone.

message 121: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 1438 comments It's not you for sure. It was us. I think we all just crashed and burned and couldn't get the plane back. I know that I always enjoy your challenges. Hmmm, okay if it's more assigned tasks/spell-outs I might be able to try to figure out some kind of story tomorrow night if someone else wants to still give this a go. I know our group reads tons of books but that story-telling has us all hanging on to a thread. I feel that real life really screwed me over in March and I'm just now coming back up for air.

message 122: by Shan ~A~ (new)

Shan ~A~ | 1257 comments Definitely not you Donna. The storytelling aspect completely overwhelmed me and reminded me why I have never actually played D&D. No imagination.

However, I'm willing to keep playing if we have enough participates and it's going to be more task/spell out based.

I guess we could have taken the simpler route and did the spell it out, but I also think we, or at least me, got caught in the "challenge" of it all.

message 123: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 1438 comments Oh man, I just realized that we could've done the spell-out. I can probably fill that out today if anyone else wants to move on and then we can focus on the tasks/spell-outs. I've never played D&D either. I had no idea what to even expect. I just usually like to give it my all and the spell-out didn't even register in my brain to do.

I'm game if that's the direction we want to go.

message 125: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 1438 comments I went and filled out the spreadsheet for concede but didn't post anything. I'm good to go if y'all just want to do the spell-outs and knowing that we get tasks instead of stories. I can check us in with the concede tomorrow if we decide to do that. Jax, I used one of your books that you listed read but guessed on the date finished. If you just want to double-check me on that one. Michelle, I put in books for you but it's your call if you wanna hang out. Shan, I got books in for you too.

This sounds like a plan to me. At least we see what comes next.

Quest #2

After a night in a tavern, each member of the party wakes up in the body of another member with no memory of what happened. One party member's body is gone, however, their mind instead inside a sentient item... a bag of beans.

Are these magic beans? Maybe, maybe not; plant them and find out. Worst case scenario, you could eat them. Do you eat the beans? If they are magic beans, how do you use them? Can you get everyone back in their bodies?

If you eat the beans, spell out BEANS
B
E
A
N
S

If you think they are magic beans, start here
Plant the beans
Read a book with dirt on the cover
Read a book with all the letters of BEANS in the title
Read a book with water on the cover
Read a book with a sun on the cover

Step 2: Find a solution to the body problems listed above. Use book titles BUT please use filler words as needed to tell me your solution. Minimum of 4 books. (everyone will do step 2 no matter the choices above)

For those of you playing solo... you will play this as if you were a member of the party experiencing this issue. How would you solve this? You can play as any member the party, one that is in another body or the beans. But you must present a solution.

While I am here, I wanted to give you guys a little help with the storytelling aspect that you guys are struggling with. You don't need to be perfect storytellers.

Here is an example story that I got from someone: I could sense there was A KILLER AMONG US and after consulting THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING, I was able to UNSTUFF YOUR LIFE from the beans by harnessing my magic of spiritual unity. It was FANTASY IN DEATH though as it was all a hallucination from magic spiked party drinks. Having watched THE GREAT WITCHES BAKING SHOW, I cooked and enjoyed the magic beans, which resulted in all memories being restored.

A more detailed story: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

I accepted both stories. They got very different responses, but I accepted both of them. I only had two people rewrite theirs because they didn't quite grasp the concept of the task given to them. In other words, they didn't complete the task.

One team planned their story ahead of time and found books that fit it. It was an interesting plan, and it actually worked.

message 130: by Jax (new)

Jax (jaxn) | 55 comments I think we should all record our books in the spreadsheet for a week. Take those, build out the narrative part and then see where what's left fits into the task/spellout and then do what we need to from there. That makes it a little easier to do the narrative part.

Are you guys okay? I am just checking in. I know you guys were overthinking things before. I wanted to make sure you were okay and things were moving along smoothly. I don't want you getting stuck in a rut again, if I can help you out. Remember, just the intro task has the story. So, once you get past this, it will be tasks until you move on to quest 3. Most teams were stuck in quest 2 for a while. It seems to be a big quest. It is where most teams started to figure out the game and have fun with it. We have teams releasing some interesting things into the world. Remember to use your skills. You have them for a reason.

Another tool you may use to help is ChatGPT. Another team is using it to write their stories. They are actually putting my responses into it and letting it help them write their stories. It's a kind of genius idea. And here I am actually researching this stuff... LOL!

message 133: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 1438 comments I was on vacation but am back to real life now. Thanks for all those tips! I can try to do chatgpt. I will have more time to play around with this probably Tuesday night. Should we eat the beans or plant the beans? I bet we all read books that will fit those things. I know that I've finished quite a few books for other challenges this weekend/week.

Jax (jaxn) | 55 comments Here's the announcement:
You may use any tool at your disposal to help you with the story task. I know some of you are struggling with these. Because of that, I am limiting the story tasks to the opening of each quest. After that you will be assigned tasks until the start of the next quest. So 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D, etc will have specific tasks assigned.

Some teams are using chatgpt to assist with their stories. I am allowing this. This is not supposed to be stressful. Enjoy the adventure. I am starting to level some people up so you will see that soon as well. This will give you some new abilities to use as well.

message 136: by Jax (new)

Jax (jaxn) | 55 comments I added a tab to the our spreadsheet that is titled "Books Quest2" If everyone can add the books they have read between April 19 (when we got our new quest) and the present we can start building out our story. Once that's done we can take a look at what's left and fill in the specific tasks.

As for the quest story. We are all in different bodies except one person who is in a bag of beans. My thought is we plant the beans and eat the leaves, and that switches us back into our original bodies.

message 137: by bamaace83 (new)

bamaace83 | 1438 comments I just added my books to that spreadsheet. I like that idea. I think it would work and we can use the chat gpt thingy which I've never used to write the story?
