Shaw | 681 comments I’m traveling today but I’ll update my books tonight. I know I have a few for memoirs and I’m almost done with one fior wartime courage. I’m not very good at going outside my beloved genres but I’ll find something that works.

Shandrea Freeman | 83 comments So sorry I have been absent... It took me a couple of weeks after surgery to get back to normal. I'll be updating books today!

Hi Shandrea. Glad to hear you're past the post-op period and I look forward to working with you to rack up reading points over the coming months!

Thanks, Ashley. Could you also check in with Jill, please?

I've sent her a message.

Jill (jilljorox) | 189 comments Hi to the new team members. sorry you're not doing well Michelle. FYI, though I don't post I usually check the thread often.

message 107: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 89 comments Hi everyone!

It's great to see all the team members checking in and the number of books read this month growing all the time. Remember, based on a response approved by Ashley in Q&A Msg #25, you get the Diversity Bonus for the marginalized groups identified in the link in that message, including women, so you can check that bonus for your female authors.

I know I'm a little early, but here are books I plan to read for a few of the prompts in June. I want to ask if you'd be interested in joining me so we can get the points for a Team Read? Or let us know if you have some suggestions for a Team Read. Thanks!

• Read a book where a name (or nickname) carries deep significance. Looking for Alaska (YA - 221 pp)

• Read a book about someone exploring or embracing their gender or sexual identity. Last Night at the Telegraph Club (YA - 409 pp)

• Read a book where someone finds a new talent or passion. Begin Again (YA - 352 pp)

• Read a book that deals with a character's journey through depression or anxiety. Shut Up, This Is Serious (YA - 368 pp)

• Read a book where a character reinvents themselves—for better or worse. The Sticky Note Manifesto of Aisha Agarwal (YA - 368 pp)

Shaw | 681 comments And we can check more than one box right? Say if I have a memoir with a female author?

message 109: by Jill (new)

Jill (jilljorox) | 189 comments Thanks, I haven't been including females

Shaw | 681 comments As for the group read I will join. I have read Looking for Alaska and I am not a fan of romance at all so really none of the others are appealing but I know I am in a minority on that so I will read whatever everyone else votes on. I plan on reading Fortune Favors the Dead (Pentecost and Parker, #1) by Stephen Spotswood Witches Steeped in Gold (Witches Steeped in Gold, #1) by Ciannon Smart Dread Nation (Dread Nation, #1) by Justina Ireland and maybe The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead might work.
I love my detective and horror stories so I am sure I can find one with living a double life but none come to mind at the moment.

Hi Shaw,
I'm with you in not really being a romance reader, so if the books I selected did have the romance genre thrown in there, it was secondary to other themes... and I was picking YA books in order to get the June MPG bonus points. But remember, we get "Genre Swap" points for reading outside our comfort zone, so if there's a little romance in the story, you can get some pay off for reading it. 😉

Let me know what book(s) you find for the double-life task because I don't have anything for that one yet. Maybe that could be our team read book. Here are some of the other books I found for other tasks, and these are possibilities for team reads:

Read a story told in an unconventional format (e.g., diary, podcast, letters, dual timelines): Together We Will Go

Read a book with an unreliable narrator grappling with personal truth: House of Hollow (YA)

Read a book about someone joining or leaving a community, cult, or belief system: Holes (YA)

Shaw | 681 comments I haven't quite decided which one I'll read yet - I was thinking The Spy Who Came In from the Cold (George Smiley, #3) by John Le Carré which of course is not YA but I think Red in Tooth and Claw by Lish McBride should work as a YA option. And other YA books I'm also planning on are Once & Future (Once & Future, #1) by A.R. Capetta The Monstrumologist (The Monstrumologist, #1) by Rick Yancey 14 Ways to Die by Vincent Ralph or Rose Under Fire by Elizabeth Wein

House of Hollow looks a bit interesting so I'd be ok with that one as the group read.

message 113: by Shaw (last edited May 31, 2025 10:28PM) (new)

Shaw | 681 comments Ok ya'all - I have changed up my planned books a bit for June as some of them can meet other requirements. So I will be reading Dread Nation (Dread Nation, #1) by Justina Ireland Red in Tooth and Claw by Lish McBride Once & Future (Once & Future, #1) by A.R. Capetta The Monstrumologist (The Monstrumologist, #1) by Rick Yancey A Good Girl's Guide to Murder (A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, #1) by Holly Jackson The Never Tilting World (The Never Tilting World, #1) by Rin Chupeco Fortune Favors the Dead (Pentecost and Parker, #1) by Stephen Spotswood The Grimm Legacy (The Grimm Legacy, #1) by Polly Shulman 14 Ways to Die by Vincent Ralph and The Spy Who Came In from the Cold (George Smiley, #3) by John Le Carré .
Two of these count for genre swap and all but one count as YA. I can swap out Spy for House of Hollow if we decide to do that one as the group read.

message 114: by Jill (new)

Jill (jilljorox) | 189 comments I have my books selected for the month, but I'm willing to swap if there's a chosen team read.

message 115: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 681 comments Do you have a preference on a book for the team read? Or are we not voting on it and one of us just picks a book?

message 116: by Jill (last edited Jun 02, 2025 11:58AM) (new)

Jill (jilljorox) | 189 comments If anyone is willing, check to see if any of my planned books are interesting to you. All are YA and majority qualify for the diversity bonus

message 117: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 681 comments I vote that we either use House of Hollow or We Were Liars as the group read. I have read The Hate U Give and did really enjoy it so I would be willing to read it again as the group read as well.

Ruth | 89 comments Shaw wrote: "I vote that we either use House of Hollow or We Were Liars as the group read. I have read The Hate U Give and did really enjoy it so I would be willing to read it again as the group read as well."

I've already read We Were Liars. I was able to get The Spy Who Came in From the Cold from the library, so that one could also be an option for team read. But for the team read to count, we need all 5 to agree to read the same book.

message 119: by Jill (new)

Jill (jilljorox) | 189 comments Yep, we all need to come to a consensus. It's okay if we don't as well, seeing as we all have different reading interests. My books 99.9999% of time are romance so I've really been out of my comfort zone these last couple of months. Obviously, February was the best. But if we are planning to, I'd like to know as soon as possible. Trying not to be scrambling at the last minute as usual.

I was also able to get Not Your Sidekick from the library and would be happy to have either that one or Shaw's The Spy Who Came In from the Cold as a team read for the "character living a double life" task.

Maybe the three of us can agree on a book and hope that Shandrea and Catherine decide to join in?

message 121: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 681 comments I can listen to Not Your Sidekick for free so I would be willing to read that as a group read as well.

message 122: by Jill (new)

Jill (jilljorox) | 189 comments So we have 3 for Not Your Sidekick, let's hope the others are ok with thst option and has access to it. For extra points we can do a buddy read as well.

message 123: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 681 comments Should we send a message to Shandrea and Catherine and ask them for their opinion on the group read?

message 124: by Jill (new)

Jill (jilljorox) | 189 comments Shaw wrote: "Should we send a message to Shandrea and Catherine and ask them for their opinion on the group read?"

Can't hurt.

message 125: by Catherine (last edited Jun 06, 2025 10:54PM) (new)

Catherine (royaltiescmb) | 498 comments Thanks for the message......I am good with either Not your Sidekick or The Spy who came in from the cold. 😍

message 126: by Jill (new)

Jill (jilljorox) | 189 comments Just need Shandrea's input now.

message 127: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 89 comments FWIW, we get the extra YA genre points for Not Your Sidekick. I have and can do either book, but wanted to throw in that reminder for consideration.

message 128: by Jill (new)

Jill (jilljorox) | 189 comments Ruth wrote: "FWIW, we get the extra YA genre points for Not Your Sidekick. I have and can do either book, but wanted to throw in that reminder for consideration."

That's why I chose it originally. all my books are YA. Will probably swap one to get the genre swap bonus

message 129: by Shandrea (new)

Shandrea Freeman | 83 comments I don’t read YA. I am not really interested in reading that book.. I’m sorry team. I don’t think I’m a good fit for this challenge. I am going to back out of the challenge. I really do apologize. Good luck

message 130: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 681 comments In that case we appreciate you recognizing that and withdrawing.

message 131: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 681 comments Does it count as a group read if the four of us read Not Your Sidekick before there is a replacement player?

message 132: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 89 comments I was wondering the same thing. I asked Ashley in the Q&A.

message 133: by Jill (new)

Jill (jilljorox) | 189 comments If anyone is still trying to fit Not Your Sidekick into a category, it works for 1, 2 and 6

message 134: by Jill (new)

Jill (jilljorox) | 189 comments Are we continuing as a team of 4? or will we receive a new player next month?

message 135: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 681 comments Idk if there will be a replacement player available but it’s good to know we’ve got the go ahead on the group read. That feels like quite an accomplishment lol

message 136: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (royaltiescmb) | 498 comments Jill wrote: "If anyone is still trying to fit Not Your Sidekick into a category, it works for 1, 2 and 6"

Thanks I am starting mine soon!!

message 137: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 681 comments Hopefully the July group read with Bookworm Brigade goes just as well.

message 138: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 89 comments Jill wrote: "Are we continuing as a team of 4? or will we receive a new player next month?"

It sounds like we may be continuing as a team of 4 based on Ashley's response in the Q&A message 281. She says:

"I have a couple of teams that need players, but I don't have any backups at the moment. If you have someone you think might want to participate, have them sign up!

As far as books, those of you who are missing members will get mod books to fill in the gaps until they are filled."

I'm wondering if there are teams where all but one or two of the readers are missing, and if those folks would consider joining a team like ours where we only need one replacement?

message 139: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 89 comments Hi everyone!

Shaw and I are already checked in to participate in the July Book Bridge Mini Challenge described by Ashley in the Q&A. Our collab team is The Book Thief.

Please let us know if you’ll be joining as we have upcoming deadlines next week. Thanks!!!

message 140: by Jill (new)

Jill (jilljorox) | 189 comments As of right now I have no interest in the chosen book.

message 141: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 89 comments We're doing really well for a team of only four right now. Jill has documented all 10 books and Shaw is right there too with 9 entered on the SS. Woot, woot!!!

I'm on schedule to finish my 9th book by tomorrow and will read book #10 before the end of the week.

It'll be exciting when Catherine enters the Read Date for her books - The Goldfinch alone is nearly 1,000 pages, gets the Diversity Reading bonus, and already has Catherine's review linked, so that will be about 60-65 points right there, I'm guessing. Wow!

message 142: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 681 comments I'll be finished with my last book in the next couple of days as well. I had one that I finished but it didn't count for the diversity part so with time still left before the end of the month I changed it.

message 143: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 89 comments I've got all my books completed and reviews linked, so I'm done.

I messaged Catherine earlier this week to check if she'll be recording books for June, and she replied today saying she would be updating the SS right away, so hopefully we'll get to see another point increase soon. 🙌🏼

message 144: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (royaltiescmb) | 498 comments Sorry guys, my spread sheet info is all updated for the month. I did not end up reading the team book.

message 145: by Catherine (last edited Jun 30, 2025 01:56PM) (new)

Catherine (royaltiescmb) | 498 comments What are these for next month?
Q3 Bonus: Book Title Challenge
and
Book Bridge Bonus

And it looks like the team book is The Seventh Veil of Salome by Silvia Moreno-Garcia . I was able to get on Libby so I will join the book in July.

message 146: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 681 comments So do we have to delete our group read points since all members didn’t read the group book?

message 147: by Catherine (last edited Jun 30, 2025 05:09PM) (new)

Catherine (royaltiescmb) | 498 comments Here are some other book ideas that already have an IBR and some I am going to ask for as those give us massive upgrade points.

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... for The Trees by Percival Everett - free on audible

(https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...) Our team chat but also asking for IBR

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... The Stolen Queen by Fiona Davis - only 1.99 for Kindle on amazon. My library has all books out

I asked for
Under a Gilded Moon by Joy Jordan-Lake - on KU
and
The Sword of Kaigen by M.L. Wang - on KU also its longer so more points and reading in another challenge.

message 148: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 681 comments To get the Buddy Read bonus it doesn’t have to be the formal buddy read which is already selected? I’ve actually not participated in a buddy read befores so idk how they work.

message 149: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 89 comments Shaw wrote: "So do we have to delete our group read points since all members didn’t read the group book?"

That's correct. We almost got it, but not this month... and probably not in July because the additional mini challenge complicates things and we're committed to The Seventh Veil of Salome to get the "Book Bridge Bonus" where both of the paired teams that are part of The Book Thief team are reading the same book).

message 150: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 89 comments Shaw wrote: "To get the Buddy Read bonus it doesn’t have to be the formal buddy read which is already selected? I’ve actually not participated in a buddy read befores so idk how they work."

Yep. The Buddy Read is different than the Team Reading Bonus. So far, I just haven't been invested in the books chosen for the general Book Quest Buddy Read and I haven't had an interest in setting up a BR thread as explained in message 28 of the Book Quest Q&A. It's just been hard enough to read the 10 books that fit the different prompts, so throwing in a BR was more than I could fit in.
