The Compass
Did you ever want to travel the world wherever the four winds might blow you or maybe you have a more modest goal of traveling your country or state? Whatever your travel goal, you will have a chance to achieve it by reading books at Play Book Tag with our compass challenge. We will travel the world through books and using our trusty Four Winds or Anemoi Compass to guide us. It can be found here:
https://pickerwheel.com/?id=3qcAP

You can complete the challenge with 12 books, but you may certainly read more, however you may not read more than one book for the challenge each week. We wanted to create a challenge which would excite all kinds of readers and add to the enjoyment of their year in reading. We hope we have done that.

As usual the book should be 150 pages and tag match is 5 people tagging.

1. The Challenge will start on Wednesday, January 1, 2025. The first spin will be on Wednesday, December 25, 2024.

2. At the start of the challenge all participants will be given an individual spin and move from where they are currently located (in real life.). They will then move in the direction indicated and choose a book to read. The directions are North, Northeast, East, Southeast, South, Southwest, West, Northwest.

3. To establish location, you can match the location with 5 people tagging location, quote from the book or a blurb about the book clearly stating location. We are requesting that the setting of the book is a major portion not an incidental mention.

If you read a book about a journey, you can start at the beginning location and your next move can be at the ending location.

4. A spin for directions will be given once a week, every Wednesday at no given time. If the participant has read and reviewed a book, they may take the randomized direction to the next location. Spins may also be requested if the spin from the previous week was unsatisfactory to the participant.

5. To assist in determining direction, use this guideline:

North: 0 degrees or 360 degrees
North East: 45 degrees
East: 90 degrees
South East: 135 degrees
South: 180 degrees
South West: 225 degrees
West: 270 degrees
North West: 315 degrees

To determine distance and direction you may want to use
https://www.mapdevelopers.com/distanc...

6. Participants will have 3 free tickets to choose the direction of their choice.

7. Moves can be made in the given direction. The furthest North is the North Pole and the furthest south is the South Pole. Directions East and West may not exceed half the circumference of the globe, 12,451 miles or 20,238 kilometers.

8. The twist to this challenge is participants set their own challenge or goal. For example: to circle the globe x number of times, to travel to 20 states, countries or provinces, to climb a number of mountains or to go any way the wind blows. Creativity with the goal will count.

9. Extra points will be given for matching the tag of the month, as well as tag for location.. Points are as follows:
1 point - per book or location
2 points - tag for location
3 points - matching tag of the month.

10. Once you have completed your 12 books, you may decide if you want to stop, continue on or create a new goal for the next 12 books.

11. Awards for completion of challenge will be:
Most creative goals.
Greatest distance traveled per 12 books.
Least distance traveled per 12 books.
Points for tag match per 12 books.
Points for the whole year of the challenge.

12. The challenge will be completed on the last day of November

It pays to read the instructions completely. My starting point is Colorado, not Tennessee. That is where I wanted to start. My bad...sorry.

Amy | 12907 comments This was so helpful. But I have a question about number nine. I understand that for every book we read at a new location, we get one point. I also understand that for matching the tag of the month we get three points. I could not figure out what that middle two pointer signified…. I couldn’t make heads or tails with that. Can you clarify the middle one?

I believe that it means if your book is actually tagged for the location (possibly needs to follow the general PBT guideline of minimum of 5 times?) then you get two points. So, like, your directional takes you to Oregon.

1 pt if you can demonstrate that it takes place in Oregon, through a description or quote or something.

2 pts if the book is actually tagged Oregon (by 5 people?, not sure about that part)

3 pts if the monthly tag is also Oregon.

Hope that makes sense?

Let's take January's tag for instance:
The book has 5 people tagging for Canada -3 points
The specific location of the book is Vancouver and 5 people tagged it as Vancouver - 2 points

Does that clarify?

Ahhh I didn't quite have that right either in my explanation so I'm glad that was clarified, thank you.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12562 comments Fran, does it have to be tagged with a city name or can it be the country name?

Amy | 12907 comments Yes! OK - you can have the monthly 5 tags for 3 points And the specific location, 5tag 2 points. And if you have them both, you get five? Or is it six?

So if the monthly tag is coffee and I head to Shri Lanka, and my book is tagged coffee with 5 tags and also Shri Lanka with five tags, then I am in good business with 1 +2 + 3? But otherwise I get one point for the entry, two points for Matching Shri Lanka, and three more points for coffee? I am glad I wasn't the only one who needed this explained more....

It can be a country name, state or province.

Booknblues | 12045 comments Just to clarify a little more, I said at one point that I would accept a country as a tag, but it needs to be a smaller country that an arrival or departure can be identified.

This month with Canada makes it a bit confusing. While Canada is north of California, Nova Scotia is North West, so we need to be a little more specific with arrival and departure or the 2 point tag.

Amy | 12907 comments OK - forgive me if this has been asked and answered. I did look, but I couldn't find it.

So if Use Toulouse which is in France to be exact and specific for Mileage, and just to be specific for the map, then can I use France for the extra two points for matching the location? Because this book has a ton of tags for France, but not necessarily any for Toulouse. I got confused on this point.
