Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments Welcome snow leopards! Please add your name to the spreadsheet and any books you are currently/planning to read. Also mark off where they fit in the spreadsheet.

I saved an hour on The Celebrants so will finish that up fairly early tomorrow.

I volunteered to be co-leader before I looked at my schedule! I am retired so mostly available BUT I have holiday events from 10am-4pm Saturday and 9am-10pm Sunday. I will also be traveling Tues evening till Thurs afternoon. I will be able to check in at least once a day, in any case. (And sadly, my husband doesn't appreciate audiobooks and I can't read in a moving car, so the 4.5 hour trip each way is a bust for reading time. )

All the other days, I will be online regularly. I'm sure Nancy will handle things during those times I am unavailable. And I think many of us are old hands at this. Because it's based on GR shelves, there aren't any gray areas of "does this qualify?"

Any spreadsheet experts here? I wanted to mark that Crooked Plow fits South America, since that might be a hard one to get, but the spreadsheet won't let me type into that column. Do we have to ask Emily B to fix it?

I was able to fix it. The font color was set to white so you could type in it but not able to see it

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments I got you Robin! Enjoy your events. I'll be cleaning and putting up my holiday decorations this weekend, with a break to see my son in an honor band performance.

Bec | 1338 comments Hi all,
I'm not going to be so uesful for the first part of the week. I'm reading some ARCs but can't find shelves for them...so looks like they wont' count. Although looks like shelves pop after publishing and one is published 13 Dec so I may be able to add something after that.

I'm also doing 2 advent calendar books, so reading a chapter a day. They will count for pages but I won't get them read until 25 December.

I'm finding it a bit tricky working out what shelves fit given the list of top shevels isn't in alphabetical order. Just time consuming I guess.

Bea | 430 comments So glad there are captains for this team! When I posted above, there were only two names on the team...and I have no experience with how to do this.

I will finish 2 of the 3 books tomorrow...and maybe all three. Do I list the shelves on the spreadsheet? Most of my books will be from the library and I am thinking that can only be listed once...as I expect will be true for mystery as a genre. Do I list only one thing per book?

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11201 comments Mod
Hey everyone, happy read-a-thon! A note on the spreadsheet:

The Completion Sheet tab is your best friend here. You will log hours and pages read to earn wild cards, and you will mark book tags as completed here. To do that, simply write the book you've finished in the row for the book tag you are using it for and the column for your name. Then check off the checkbox at the end of the row. This will mark the whole row as completed. If you have any questions, please send them to the Intro & FAQs thread. Happy reading!

message 14: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11201 comments Mod
Bea, for the planning tab, people generally mark all of the prompts that the book fits, then use the Possibilities column to see which tag has the least options and use the book for that tag. Of course your captains may have different instructions, but I wanted to pop in and clarify.

Trish (trishhartuk) | 1236 comments Mod
Afternoon, all

I've been a bit of a book jumper lately, so I'm starting partway through a number of titles, although all have at least 100pg left in them.

The Library of the Dead (on page 22 of 330, 308pg to go)
From Nazis to NASA (on page 233 of 368, 135pg to go)
Sad Cypress (on page 10 of 235, so 225pg to go)

Then, short term to start, for finishing other challenges, and so I can mix up the order I have

A Midwinter's Tail
A Curious Beginning
Crying in H Mart
XOXO
Away with the Penguins

I also have a couple of shorties on the menu for filling gaps:
Orbital
Beast-Laid Plans
A Christmas Carol
Tooth and Claw: A Longmire Story

I've also got one I want to quickly finish, which I could presumably use for page count, but not a task, as I'm on 181 of 229 (48pg left) - now finished and entered in the spreadsheet.

I also have two I'm in the middle of reading which don't have a "top shelves" page, so I'm getting that clarified - they may only be read for pages

Death Through a Dark Green Glass (on page 62 of 290, 228pg to go)
The Christmas Clause (on page 43 of 187, 144pg to go)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments Bec wrote: "I'm finding it a bit tricky working out what shelves fit given the list of top shevels isn't in alphabetical order. Just time consuming I guess."

Yes, agreed on this. Too bad there's no way to sort the shelves.

And yes Emily, that's how we should do it! Others have already started marking what prompts their books fit. Also once a prompt is met, I will highlight that row in the Planned sheet so everyone knows not to use it.

I started a puzzle and an audio book last night and as usual got sucked in, so I have two audios that I'll finish up today while cleaning and decorating!

Here One Moment is over 500 pages so I may put it aside for the week. I have two Christmas books that are short that I will definitely finish this week, plus some others on my Kindle.

message 17: by JennH (new)

JennH | 564 comments Hi Team Snow Leopard! I've just been added to your team. So excited to be here. So excited about the readathon. Love them!

I'm finishing up Board Stiff (120 pages left) and I've started listening to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

I'll tackle the spreadsheet later. I'm currently on someone's computer right now and it looks like I show up as them, so I'd rather wait until I get my laptop later.

Emma R. | 79 comments Hi all,

I'm going into a chaotic work week, so I'm only committing to two books for now. I'll be reading other books so I can add page/audio count but I'm not sure if I will finish them.

Here's where I'm at with my current books:
The Spellshop - 211 pages left
The Hobbit, or There and Back Again - 4:00 hours left

message 20: by Sophia (new)

Sophia (jonquilles) | 192 comments Hi, another late addition here! Today has turned out to be a bit hectic (doesn't it always, just when I want to read) but after this weekend it should be smooth sailing. This challenge might be tricky for me because I'm not sure some of these books have that many shelves listed? But at least the pages will count!

Currently I'm only got a few things on deck:
I Sweep the Sun Off Rooftops (just Asia, it looks like?)
Roaming (graphic novel)
Persephone Station (cover-love)

Also is it just me or do I not see any shelves named after stars? Is it just the books I'm looking at, do people just not like naming shelves after ratings anymore?

message 21: by Robin P, Orbicular Mod (new)

Robin P | 4010 comments Mod
Welcome to anyone new, it's not too late. The Mods didn't give you a lot of advance notice!

I was supposed to be gone this afternoon but that got canceled so I hope I can get more reading in.

message 22: by Bea (new)

Bea | 430 comments OK...I have finished two of the three books and recorded them on the spreadsheet as well as did 31 minutes of an audiobook that I started today. Can someone check to see if I have recorded this correctly?

That's fine, I can move the completed books to the Completed sheet. In the future, you can either do this yourself, or just let us know what is completed and where it goes.

For audiobooks, the calculation is in hours, so for 31 minutes, you will want to put .5, that is half an hour. Otherwise it will either count 31 hours, or maybe nothing if it doesn't recognize your format. You can round everything to the nearest 15 minutes, so you could have .25 for 15 minutes, .50 for 30 minutes, and .75 for 45 minutes. It's a little confusing but that's how it's set up. For example, 2 hrs and 45 minutes would be 2.75.

You get to say which category you want your completed books to go under. You could see if they match a category that has few options.

message 26: by Robin P, Orbicular Mod (new)

Robin P | 4010 comments Mod
I finished Weyward, which was the only one for Book of the Month. Also I read Passport and put it under Memoir.

Nancy, if you want to organize things differently, feel free. I marked in green the completed categories.

Passport is a graphic novel, which we can use if they're long enough. I have a couple others I hope to get to this week.

message 27: by Sophia (new)

Sophia (jonquilles) | 192 comments Finished the back half of I Sweep the Sun Off Rooftops and put it under Asia - my understanding is that it's not what we have these books shelved under, it's what's listed for the genres on the book page? This is a pretty obscure book, I guess, since it actually has a total of 7 genres and that's it. I've marked it as Asia since the only other option it fits is Fiction and we have tons of options for that.

Also finished Roaming and put it under Graphic Novel. Am feeling a bit stuck on what to read next since I generally like to read things that we don't have a lot of options for on the spreadsheet and for some reason this challenge is proving harder for me to wrap my brain around?

message 28: by Bea (new)

Bea | 430 comments Robin, thanks for the help. I think I got the books placed correctly on the completed tab and I added total pages read for yesterday.

I used the mystery and cozy mystery genres.

Hey Teams! I have updated the spreadsheet to include a Wild Card tracker and Books Read tracker.

To use a wild card, simply place WILD CARD in any box and check the box at the end of the row. The counter should pick it up, as long as the only thing that is in the box are the words WILD CARD (capitalization not required). Let me know in the FAQs thread if it's giving you trouble.

JennH | 564 comments Yesterday I had some unexpected extra waiting time, so I got to finish two audiobooks. I'm trying my best to finish the book I'm reading but my brain isn't really cooperating. But there really isn't that many pages left....

Hopefully, I've added the books correctly to the Completion Sheet. Since the rows suddenly were filled in with a color, I'm assuming I did something right. lol

And since it seems like we're filling out the planning sheet at an awesome rate, I took the initiative and added some more columns.

Afternoon, all

I'm planning on concentrating on reading Sad Cypress today, as it's got a lot of options. I'll see how I go.

message 33: by Nancy (last edited Dec 08, 2024 09:18AM) (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments Happy Sunday everyone! I finished 3 books so slotted those into spots. I also moved the columns for books that were completed to the Completed tab.

Robin for your books I put the title in the Completion Sheet tab, instead of an X, since that's what others have been doing. Also I see you marked Bloom as Completed but didn't put it in for a prompt, Young Adult might be good since it has the least amount of options?

Also, on the Planning tab, I highlighted the rows in green for the prompts we've completed, this makes it easier to see what we still have to tackle.

Let me know if this makes sense or if anyone has any questions!

message 34: by Trish, Annular Mod (last edited Dec 08, 2024 11:56AM) (new)

Trish (trishhartuk) | 1236 comments Mod
Sad Cypress completed for 225pg.

I've put it in for "Have", as we only had a couple of books for that one, although obviously, if it needs to be moved, it can be - it has other options.

I'll aim to read The Library of the Dead, as it's one of the two horror books we have listed.

message 35: by JennH (new)

JennH | 564 comments Hi all. I just wanted to give heads up that I'm reading a book online, During the Snowstorm, that doesn't tell me pages, just chapters. I asked Emily in the FAQs and she said that I could divide the book evenly to figure out pages based on goodreads or log in the end. I think it's easiest if I log when I'm done with the book, but it'll look crazy that I read so many pages in one day. lol

message 36: by Bec (new)

I had a quick change of plan, and finally finished From Nazis to NASA, which I've put in for Non-Fiction, because as far as I can tell, it was the only book we had for that shelf.

Now back to The Library of the Dead.

message 41: by Bea (new)

Bea | 430 comments I accomplished nothing yesterday other than finishing the third book I had listed above. I have started two others: One Good Turn (418p) and Aunt Bessie Goes, which is nearly 8h of audio. So I will work on those two today.

message 42: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments I finished one more book. My pace will slow down drastically thanks to working and evening events, and this coming weekend will be busy as well though should get more audio time in. I hope to finish at least one more print/Kindle and one more audio.

I finished Crook Manifesto and put it under Historical. Kind of weird because not only was I alive when it takes place, 1970's, but I was an adult already! I don't usually think of my lifetime as historical.

I also finished another graphic novel, Bloom, and put it under 3 Stars.

message 44: by Bec (new)

Bec | 1338 comments I'm feeling a bit inadequate in my reading compared to the rest of you. I have finished 2 books but one was a novella so not long enough and the other is too new (not published yet) and doesn't have any genres, but I needed to get it read to write a review.
I'm 2.5 hours off finishing The Co-Worker so will be able to count that shortly. I've just started a new book which is only 250 pages so I'll knock it off within the next few days. That only fits contemporary, fiction or young adult.

Please don't worry about comparing yourself to anyone. We all have different lives and different kinds of books. I "cheated" by reading 2 graphic novels, which probably took 1 hour each. And I am retired, so I often have a lot of time. But Wed & Thurs I will be on the road and read very little.

Don't feel bad, we're all reading at different paces and at different points in our books! The point is that we work together and every page/hour adds up when we need wildcards. I suspect we're going to need a bunch for some of these more specifically worded shelves!

Cool. I'll pull Tooth and Claw out of the planning tab, then.

I think I'll try for either Orbital (nice and short) and Crying in H Mart next.

I could also bring back The Christmas Clause, as it has Romance and I have 144pg to go, although I think there are other options for that.

Looks like our main problem is the geographical ones and the stars. I know the ones I looked at had countries and regions, rather than continents, and an lot of UK, but not United-Kingdom. Plus I only saw 5- and 4-stars in my choices, as I suspect the 3-, 2- and 1- are further down the pages.
