The Gates question

I've been looking for a book I read years ago and can't seem to find it. AI tells me it's called The Bite by John Connolly, but when I look it doesn't exist. It's about a boy who goes to a foster home that has strange things happening and weird rules that must be obeyed. The house is haunted by it's previous owners, with the man being the one who likes to bite people. If the kids follow the rules and are really quiet, supposedly they won't be bitten. These bites cover their entire body and are very painful and leave bruises behind and the teeth breaks the skin too. The foster mom is 'trapped' there because her own two children rely on these things to keep them alive or their soul is forfeited to these entities. Help Please! :)
