“Leviticus.. This is it. You’ve said goodbye? To everyone?”
“Yes.”
“You’re ready? Because there’s no going back..”
“Y-yes, Fire. I die either way… I just can’t let the others die.
“Very well.”
The flame element swung open the metallic door of the circular machine, letting the silvery wisp of Leviticus’s soul step, albeit shakily, into it. Shutting the door behind, he peered through the small window at her with a sorrowful and understanding expression. After a moment, she spoke up in a small, tentative voice. “I n-never come back after this, do I?
Fire shook his head. “No.”
Nodding shakily, she sat cross-legged on the pristine floor of the complex device. Fire instructed her to attach the wrist cuffs, and when she did, he moved a long lever upwards. An ominous humming noise emanated from the chamber, and as he pressed a large red button, the wires leading the cuffs to the circular walls began to spark. Leviticus’s soul went rigid, and her eyes squeezed shut.
“I-I’m sorry,” she gasped, as the wires began to pulse with silver lightning and her spirit form was racked with immense pain and electricity. “We’ll get back, I promise! We’ll find a way back home!”
Fire turned away from the glass, ember-tears dripping down his flaming face. He had liked the Guardian, even loved her in a way. But he couldn’t deny her this one wish, to save the multiverses. “I’m sorry…” He muttered, and his hand shook as he tried to keep his hand steady.
“It hurts!” She cried, and something just beneath the surface of her soul shimmered with a dark, menacing light and pulsed to the surface, like a disease.
“LET US GO! WE CAN’T- NO!”
Suddenly, the silver threads of lightning wrapped around the core of her being– her heart. As the electricity attacked the center of her soul, she let out a wordless scream of pain and sorrow.
Then the shockwaves burst from her heart.
The waves of power slammed against the walls of the machine, and the wires shattered and crumbled into heaps. The seams of the metal cracked and widened, and then with a shriek of protest, the entire thing bent outwards, looking swollen. Fire was thrown backwards, and he slammed into the wall of the room with a hiss of pain, not unlike an ember.
Everything in the room was on fire, the silvery flames licking the walls and dancing across the floor..All of the devices were flickering and going haywire as the Guardian’s power racked them.
“I’m sorry…”
Then, everything went dead still and silent. Fire sat up, got to his feet, and rushed to the machine. The center of it was completely white and clean– pristine, even, but there were charred streaks where the shockwaves had burst out of Leviticus’s core.
The fire element hastily glanced around for any pieces of her soul– the tiny, glass-like shards that usually were left behind when a Guardian or monster died.
There was nothing.
“Fire.”
The flame element Guardian whipped his head up to see a woman with chest-length, wavy sky blue hair. Her face was actually glowing, radiating beams of light of a color that Fire had never seen before.
“M-Mother Moon,” He gasped, instantly dropping to his knees and putting his hand to his lips in a signature sign of respect.
“Hush, Child. Stand.”
He did as he was told, averting his gaze from her face and instead studying her massive, white, feathered wings. They looked fit for an angel.
“Her soul is gone. We can recreate her, but she will never be the same. You must swear never to tell her the truth about herself, Child of the Flames…”
She trailed off, staring down at the flaming person and brushing her smooth, fair-skinned hand across his face. She seemed unperturbed by the flames that started to crawl up her hand. He nodded, still not looking directly into her eyes, which were a soft, periwinkle blue. “Th-thank you, O Great Mother, for blessing m-me with your radiance,” he breathed.
“There is no need to thank me, Child. I do what must be done. It is I who must thank you for letting the Guardian Child make her own decision. She made the right choice, though it seems that it was not.”
Mother Moon faded away, the colorful light the last thing to leave the chamber. An image of her beauty was imprinted on Fire’s mind, and he felt reassured.
But only a little.
She was never coming back.
He could feel her friends, the ones with flames in their souls just like Leviticus, sinking. He could feel their fire going out, slowly.
Mother Moon would do something about it. Fire was sure.
Never coming back…
