So, I simply cannot finish this. I tried the audiobook version which may have been a mistake. Between the heavy accent of the narrator and the antiquated language, I just could not follow.

I'm surprised just how much I am enjoying the book. Though I can imagine it not working so well as an audiobook, especially the parts with thick dialects. I think reading from the page helps with these as you can start to see where it resembles standard English. When I started to be able to "hear" the meaning, it was often hilariously funny.
It's a classic Gothic story with scenes I found truly horrifying. For the period it was written in, the psychological insights are pretty brilliant.
And it really feels Scottish. The high, light energy of the author's voice made such dark material easier for me to digest.
